I'm a writer, chess grandmaster & dad. I miss Twitter as it was. Now I write on Substack and hang out on Substack Notes where engagement is much better than X.

1/2 Distressing experience
@Tesco
just now. 10.50pm near Chancery Lane tube after a work event I receive a text to get a sandwich for my son’s packed lunch tomorrow. I see a store, think I’m in luck, but I can only *enter* the store if I download the app & sign up to club card.
Did Niemann cheat in online blitz?
Yes.
Did he lie about the extent of it? Probably.
Is he trustworthy?
No.
Must we presume innocence?
Yes.
Did he beat Magnus fairly?
Yes.
Was Magnus wrong to withdraw?
Yes.
Did Chess,com make the story about themselves?
Yes.
#chessdrama
Gosh, and now I see an email with my club card number has come through. When the store assistant changed my decision not to accept a club card on my phone I didn’t manage to stop him in time.
@Tesco
can you please cancel this card and let me know it’s been cancelled? Thank you.
Never have I felt the pinch of surveillance society more acutely. My shock at the compulsory data cost for entry to a supermarket to buy a sandwich made me think of
@Suitpossum
and his argument for cash. Use it to lose it, they say. And tonight I really *feel* it.
I think I have what I need at home to make my son a tasty sandwich. 🥪 👍🏻
But what I felt at that store tonight was thoroughly dystopian. It was a taste of the future in the present, and I didn’t like it at all.
I said: “Sorry but the price is too high. And people only come back because they don’t feel they have a choice. If there was a shop open next door I’d go there.” I delete the app and vow not to shop
@tesco
My impression is that
#NicolaSturgeon
is rising to the occasion. She appears to be persuading the room and the court of public opinion that she acted in good faith.
This case, and the catharsis that will hopefully follow, may even strengthen the cause of Scottish Independence.
Sad to hear Supreme Court Ruling about Scotland, though not surprised. The legal certainty now makes it clear that this is not a union of equal partners. I’m a culturally British Scottish Londoner, but I’m more sure than ever that Scotland should and will become independent.
No word I've come across better sums up Brexit than "Zugzwang". The German chess term for when you are compelled to move, but where all potential moves are disadvantageous and you just cannot win.
I love this moment.
The flamboyant extrovert knocks over the pieces and almost falls off his chair.
On becoming World Champion, the introvert does not punch the air in delight. He goes inside himself, appears to sympathise with his opponent, and quietly walks away.

@Tunde_OD

3/3 I say I just want to buy a sandwich and nowhere else is open. He says sorry but this is store policy now *and it’s what customers wants*. “Soon”, he says, “*all stores will be like this.*” “People protest, but then they come back a few days later”, he said.
Chessdotcom's report is marketing.
1. It's 20 pages, not 72.
2. No evidence of OTB cheating at all, and their attempt to whip it up is embarrassing.
3. It challenges Hans's version of prior cheating, but mostly w' online blitz games in 2020, and reasonable doubt.
#chessdrama
2/2 pragmatism had me download the app, but I said no to the club card. I can’t proceed to buy the sandwich and get home. There’s a barrier. I ask for help. The staff member takes my phone and changes my option to “accept club card”. I say no thanks. He says then you can’t get in

It's interesting to ask what's *really* going on with the reaction to the Supreme Court Ruling today. Because it's not as if anybody in Scotland particularly wanted a consultative referendum conducted by Holyrood without Westminster's approval.🧵 👇
@neofight78
@Tesco
If that’s the case then they are clearly in violation of that rule. It was literally “no data, no shopping”. For that matter it was effectively no phone no shopping too.
Should chess be in the
#Olympics
?
Is chess a sport?
Yes and yes.
After years of being asked, I tried to distill the case in a short Socratic dialogue in my book,
The Moves that Matter.
"And do you know what is in paragraph 5c?" - a memorable moment.
What impressed is that
@afneil
didn't get ruffled by his own minor in-the-moment slips ('laxical', paragraph/article conflation) and ignored invitations to scrap.
He was resolutely focussed on meaningful scrutiny.
I think today was a much bigger deal than people realise. I don't know if it's the beginning of the end of the Union, but I suspect constitutional politics in the UK is about to become even more messy and turbulent.
Overview of
#chessdrama
imo
1) Magnus rightly cares about cheating in chess and wants to lead on the matter.
2) He may have reason to think Hans has cheated online more than he’s said.
3) But he probably overreacted to an over-the-board loss by withdrawing and scapegoating Hans.
Instead, the UK government is effectively saying: The answer is no now, and will be no for as long as we like for reasons we don't have to specify, because we have the power, and there's nothing you can do about it.
@Tesco
Hi Donald, I understand this is a new concept, and you have to take the company line. But i don’t like it. “No queues and no checkouts” means “no humans”. And you don’t “need” me to use the app and club card. You harvest my personal data as part of a dehumanising business model.
I long to listen to chess commentary that is not over-done.
Chess commentators are invariably just a bit too pumped up for my taste.
They talk to each other like they are astonished about everything.
“Oh my god. He moved the knight!”
That kind of thing…
#fidecandidates
The word I keep coming back to is humiliation. I don't think Scotland is a colony as such, but it's equally wrong to ignore the basis of that claim. After today, Scotland can be seen as a nation that is unable to achieve statehood without the permission of another state.
@hmoazzam_
It’s not actually support for Hans as such. It’s support for clear thinking and the principle of the presumption of innocence. The heart of this story is not a few online blitz games in 2020 but the world champion destroying a teenager’s career in 2022 without justification.
Gukesh 🤦♂️😢
Chess can be so cruel.
He played a brilliant technical game to achieve a winning position, but after stubborn resistance from Abdusattor, the pressure of the event must have got to him.
#ChessOlympiad
Q: Why don’t you want to play him?
A: He has cheated in the past and he might be cheating in the present.
Q: Which point is more important? Are you punishing him for past misdemeanours or do you have good reason to suspect he’s cheating now?
A: A bit of both.
#chessdrama
What we wanted the court to say was that Scotland had the right to leave the UK if it chose to do so. Because that right is totemic for Scotland's self-esteem as a nation. What the court said is that we have no such right, which calls into question the meaning of nationhood.
My brother, Mark Christopher Rowson, died peacefully on November 2nd. He had a joyous childhood which kept his morale high throughout 27 years of schizophrenia. I was touched to see many old school friends at the funeral in Aberdeen yesterday. He will be dearly missed.

I can see why it's thought to be clever to call the SNP "Scottish Nationalist Party" rather than "Scottish National Party" but it is really stupid.
It's not just that it's rude. The issue is that it entails performative contempt, which in spirit is a kind of *bullying*.
#bbcqt
Those who see Nepo's blunders in the last two games as an indication of the challenger's chess strength are completely missing the point.
What these mistakes reveal is the limit of a human nervous system when forced to encounter a superior opponent day after day.
#CarlsenNepo
But maybe they miss the point. The fact it has happened and could keep happening is a violation of Scotland's sense of its own nationhood. I do think it makes sense to speak of national humiliation here. There are all sorts of examples of power asymmetries to make sense of this.
If you are wondering how one of the best players in the world can blunder with 27.c5?? in

No.
Much is lost in the name of modernisation.
Chess has to be more than breathless excitement and frenetic hand movement.
The game is truest to itself when it’s slow, silent, thoughtful, deep and beautiful.
Let’s allow it to stay that way.
Per Magnus Carlsen, chess needs to modernize.

The lawsuit is written like a tabloid article with a “Better call Saul” vibe, and the $100,000,000 figure seems designed to grab attention, but that doesn’t mean the underlying case is unsound. Prima facie, there is a case to answer. I’m very curious to see what happens next.
Terms like genocide are weighty and should not be used lightly.
So please watch this informed and discerning legal case for why what the Israeli government is doing in Gaza amounts to genocide.
The language matters.
The law matters.
Without them, what’s left of civilisation?
Gaza is a 'textbook genocide'.
This is according to Raz Segal - an Israeli associate professor of Holocaust and genocide studies at Stockton University in the US.
Listen carefully to what he says.
It's based on facts, law and precedent - and it should terrify you.

Professor Devi Sridhar is my main go-to person to figure out what’s happening with COVID-19.
Her expertise is palpable, communicated clearly, and suffused with humanity.
That's why the rallies happening all over Scotland today were an important ritual act, because they served to reassert wounded national pride. At a cultural level, it's not a small thing at all, and it will manifest politically before long.
I wish I could laugh at the irony of this request from Tesco for more data, in response to a complaint about demanding data, but mostly I feel sad, alienated, and scared👇
So my bold venture back into chess has ended with a score of 5/9 against IM opposition and the loss of 15 rating points! That’s the bad news.
The good news is that chess is back in my life. Today’s second game was a beauty, and I’m proud of it, even if I screwed up at the end.
I don’t really have a dog in this fight, but if you show 2014-2019 and also compare the SNP with other parties you get a fuller picture. I’d say a fairer way to tell the story is one of extraordinary growth followed by partial consolidation rather than “decline”.
How the decline in SNP membership has played out...
Year end 2019 — 125,691
Year end 2020 — 105,393
Year end 2021 — 103,884

Those who are sanguine about it say nothing has changed. There was a referendum in 2014. There might be another later. Relax. Scotland is still a nation. Westminster can't keep Scotland against its will if it's really (even more) obvious that it wants to leave the UK.

Whatever Nepo is like off the board, as a player he is flamboyant in the sense of expressive and performative and extrovert in the sense that the energy is clearly directed outwards. I recognise he was devastated and exhausted. I’m making an aesthetic judgment, not a moral one.

We might coin a term, say, 'physio-politico', to describe the sensation where the human body recognises itself as part of the body politic when the latter is under attack.

The same people are not worried about the lack of a specified mechanism to leave the UK, or the indignity of being obliged to repeatedly ask for permission and being told no, or not yet. Because they say in practice that wouldn't happen, or at least couldn't happen indefinitely.
A brilliant game!
The queen sacrifice is easy, just ignition. What’s hard is to gather the fuel, to trust a risky opening and slow burning attack; the rook on e1, the bishop to c4 not c2, to dangle his brother the assassin on f6.

And there’s a lot of that in chess!
I don’t think Niemann cheated in his recent over-the-board game against Carlsen. I think Carlsen overreacted to losing in an unfortunate way. He seems to have projected a more general serious problem with cheating on to one relatively disempowered person without sufficient cause.
To all those who responded to this analysis by saying “stick to the chess” I would say kindly f*** off. You can be a strong chess player and have strong views on other things, and you have every right to air them. A GM is also a human, and a citizen. Treat the case on its merits.
