Well, this is interesting.
Papa John’s today named … Shaquille O’Neal its newest board member. The former NBA star will also invest in nine locations in Atlanta.
O’Neal currently owns a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts franchise and 27 Five Guys.
Chipotle is testing Chipotle Honey Chicken in Nashville and Sacramento. The chicken is marinated with adobo peppers and Mexican spices and finished with honey. Company says it received the highest marks among any chicken innovation it's ever tested. $CMG
So, uh, KFC is bringing back its bunless Double Down Sandwich for four weeks starting on March 6. It features two pieces of bacon, cheese and either mayo or spicy sauce between two crispy chicken filets.
First time in nine years it's been on the U.S. menu.
McDonald's says it is seeing decreased traffic from consumers making $45k and less. Eating at home has become more affordable so the chain is losing that group to grocers, etc. $MCD
Looks like John Schnatter has been scrubbed from the Papa John’s website.
Last week Schnatter was all over it, including a picture of him with employees and his face in the company’s logo. Now? It’s all gone.
Well, this is interesting.
Papa John’s today named … Shaquille O’Neal its newest board member. The former NBA star will also invest in nine locations in Atlanta.
O’Neal currently owns a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts franchise and 27 Five Guys.
Papa John’s board wants John Schnatter to “cease all media appearances, and not make any further statements to the media regarding the company, its business or employees.”
74% of Starbucks' beverage sales were cold. Wasn't long ago that this would be considered a complaint and not a sign of the rapid shift in overall coffee beverage mix. $SBUX
Well while I sit here, might as well do a Red Lobster thread.
The company’s problems were due to classic private equity asset unloading, lower full service demand, inflation and some ugly mismanagement. A veritable chowder of bad restaurant finance.
This is Minnesota: Thousands of people turning out to donate food to people whose grocers were burned or looted. Most brought brooms and are looking for something to clean.

: if
@Chilis
was a country it would be the third biggest buyer of tequila in the world. "The U.S. ... Mexico ... Chili's."
Legit question after 3Q earnings: Are discounts losing their cool?
Del Taco’s $1 chicken quesadilla was one of its best offerings in history and didn’t generate traffic.
Big discounter Burger King comps -0.7%.
McDonald’s 123 Dollar Menu not generating traffic.
Applebee’s $1 drink this month is the $1 Vampire, a mix of rum, strawberry, dragon fruit, passion fruit and pineapple.
You also get complimentary fangs on top of it.

The latest chain to come up with a chicken sandwich is ... Taco Bell?
The chain apparently plans to introduce a "Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco" this year. The sandwich, wrapped taco-like, will be available next month in Nashville and Charlotte.
Quiznos has been sold. Time once again to talk about the single worst restaurant chain collapse in industry history.
This chain had nearly 5,000 locations i9n 2007. It was growing like MAD. But it had one problem: Food costs. They were hurting operator profits. (More)
Looks like Starbucks plans to close 150 underperforming locations, up from a normal year of 50.
Company planning to shift unit growth to under penetrated markets and slow licensed store growth. $SBUX
Papa John’s is in a world of hurt. John Schnatter was not only chairman, he holds 30% of the company’s stock and has been its primary spokesman. His picture is on the logo, for crying out loud.
But the company isn’t just losing its spokesman. 1/3
Chipotle is offering free delivery tomorrow on National Burrito Day. It is also offering a Dobrik Burrito, after YouTuber David Dobrik's go-to order (chicken, brown rice, salsa, two scoops of corn salsa, cheese and a side of guac). $CMG
The restaurant industry is in an absolute state of mass panic unlike anything I've seen. Completely understandable.
You basically have hundreds of thousands of businesses and 12M+ people all worried for their livelihoods at the same time.
Go buy a gift card.
Restaurant operators: Please require your employees to wear masks.
Went to one place for takeout this evening. Nobody wore a mask. “Our owner doesn’t require us to.” That’s boneheaded.
“We wash our hands!” Congrats now wear a damn mask.
So I went to
@ChickfilA
yesterday for a late dinner.
The counter server was so polite it wasn’t even funny. The sandwich was so hot I had to wait to eat it. (It really is a very good product.)
This isn’t rocket science. Service and quality matters in this business.
1. I'm so glad
@MarenMorris
mentioned Linda Martell in her speech
She is the country music pioneer you've never heard of
She made history as the first Black woman to perform at Grand Ole Opry...she received a standing ovation
Sadly, she was driven out of the business by racism
This story by

is insane. A California restaurant group brought in a fake priest during work hours to hear confessions from employees. The "priest" would then report transgressions (like skipping work, etc.) back to the restaurant.
Said a final goodbye to my mother today, who died last month at 90. Afterward we went to
@olivegarden
because she absolutely loved that place. And it was fantastic.
Also, major shoutout to the excellent staff at the Oakdale, MN location.
Domino's will launch delivery by robot at a location in Houston this week, using the Nuro autonomous delivery vehicle. Customers at the location who prepay for their pizza can choose to get it delivered by the Nuro "R2" robot. $DPZ
Taco Bell has apparently filed a petition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to cancel the trademark to the phrase "Taco Tuesday," which has been owned by Taco Johns for years.
Excellent. Taco Tuesday battle.
I made Nashville hot chicken sandwiches during the blue check blackout because the kid wanted some for his birthday dinner. He ate three.
I miss having metabolism.
This is like if Chris Kempczinski publicly mocked people complaining about McDonald’s ice cream machine.
Actually I’d kind of pay to see that.
But this is just so amazingly stupid.
Boston Market, which had 300 locations at the start of 2023, is down to 27 units. That's a pretty unprecedented rate of closures without a full shutdown.
The only way your local restaurant survives is if you keep eating their food.
I've challenged three people to go get some takeout, buy a gift card or order delivery from their favorite local restaurant and challenge three others to do the same. Because

.
Not sure how I missed this one. McDonald's, which now has 40k global restaurants, last year overtook Subway for total number of locations. Subway had 37k as of the end of 2020. So McDonald's is once again the world's most ubiquitous restaurant chain.
It’s not a sandwich, but KFC is taking Mac ’n cheese, adding popcorn chicken, and making it a meal. The chain also partnered with
@TheKalenAllen
on a YouTube video.
The consumer sure as hell isn't cutting back on chicken wings right now.
Wingstop comps up 21.6%. They're putting up video game numbers at this point. $WING
So
@Arbys
is bringing back its 5-for-$5 Classic Roast Beef Sandwiches deal next week through Father's Day. But you have to order them through the app or the website.

By the way Burger King is putting bacon on an Impossible Whopper, which of course makes sense.
The Impossible Southwest Bacon Whopper features bacon and avocado spread, etc. There’s also a new Impossible King sandwich and a new Southwest Bacon Whopper.
Wow, OK: Restaurants added 47,500 jobs last month, ending a several-month slump in hiring.
Overall economy added 128,000 jobs and the unemployment rate is 3.6%.
One out of every 2.7 jobs added last month was at a restaurant.
So it has to extract its spokesman/founder/largest shareholder and figure out a way to evolve its marketing beyond sports because the company doesn’t have those deals.
Oh, and rival Domino’s is killing it right now.
Upshot: Papa John’s should call $QSR immediately. “Buy us."
Taco Bell is testing a Vegan Crunchwrap in locations with high vegan populations starting tomorrow: New York, Los Angeles and Orlando.
It features a vegan seasoned beef the company has worked on for years, vegan blanco and vegan nacho sauce.
McDonald's is launching its Crispy Chicken Sandwich on Feb. 24. There will be three versions, including spicy and deluxe. $MCD
So by my count roughly 18,543 restaurant chains have announced new chicken sandwiches over the past 13 months.
