How should we evaluate whether a law is effective? We can't conduct high quality RCTs, so orthodox evidence-based evaluation methods fail. My colleague Alexandra Trofimov and I argue for an approach based on Evidential Pluralism. Open access:

@BoussageonR @federicarusso @pash22 @SaulPerGon_ @PloederlM @NaudetFlorian @EMA_News @US_FDA @gianlubaio Evidential Pluralism argues that both should be scrutinised. Ignoring relevant biological evidence also constitutes an epistemological error.

@BoussageonR @federicarusso @pash22 @SaulPerGon_ @PloederlM @NaudetFlorian @EMA_News @US_FDA @gianlubaio ... Mechanistic evidence can be very relevant and is sometimes considered informally and unsystematically by drug approval panels. Evidential Pluralism/EBM+ give us methods for making it explicit and systematically integrating mech evidence with clinical studies in an evaluation.

@BoussageonR @pash22 @SaulPerGon_ @federicarusso @PloederlM @NaudetFlorian Evidential Pluralism doesn't say that RCTs should be avoided. It says that we need to consider mechanistic evidence *alongside* clinical studies. It offers methods for evaluating effectiveness in the light of a broader evidence base.
