Also a reminder that I have one of the best Substacks out there, and it doesn't cost a damn thing to subscribe because, frankly, it isn't worth actual money:

The other big thing I learned -- and I wish I knew how to teach -- was to read my own work through someone else's eyes. Academia does not train you for this. In my experience, only being edited does.

I wrote about Ed Park's delightful Pulitzer-finalist novel, "Same Bed Different Dreams," which features surely the best novelization of the history of the Buffalo Sabres: the Knoxes, Punch, Tim Horton, Taro, No Goal, etc. #LetsGoBuffalo #Sabres

That's right: I haven't posted in a year, and now I post about this. That's how mad I am about people who've made getting mad at the newspaper into a pastime / career / vocation / sixth personality trait.

@DangerBrooks I want to read whatever these guys subscribe to; they're getting perfectly accurate news before anyone else even reports it! For what it's worth, I wrote about this on Some Other Website a couple weeks ago:

Last month I traveled to a small town in Missouri that has become a pilgrimage site for Catholics all around the country this year. This is a story about bodies, faith, race, traditionalism, miracles & a 95-year-old nun with “a hell of a will.” Gift link:

The last thing I published was 1200 words on a small topic I had been thinking about for ten years.

Writing is only painful when I haven't had the time to do the pre-thinking. The thinking doesn't need to be done, but maybe 80%? That frees me up to enjoy the last 20% that only happens when I'm actually typing

This point right here: I think it is only truer today than 10 years ago that academics tend to see structural problems as obviating the individual call to address questions of meaning.

@CTMathewes Oh man, thanks for reminding me of the JCVL essay. It was very helpful to me at a time when these things were very unsettled.
