Carding converts a continuous web of fibres into individual ribbons known as rovings. It is an age-old process and has changed so little that one of the carding machines bought by James Johnston for his mill in Elgin in 1868 was still working satisfactorily up to 1993.

Some processes are better left untouched. When the teasel heads are wet they become flexible and the hooked ends gently tease out and align the cashmere fibres to produce the characteristic ripple finish.

October 2020 marks our 223rd birthday, offering the chance to reflect on our rich and diverse history, spanning three centuries. We are incredibly proud of everything we have achieved over the last 223 years and of every individual who has played a part in our success.
We are Scotland's second oldest family business and the only remaining vertical mill in Scotland. Johnstons of Elgin was founded in 1797 by Alexander Johnston on the banks of the River Lossie.

At the end of its life, your natural wool will biodegrade and return to the soil. Fibres classed as non-biodegradable such as polyester, viscose and nylon will take between 20 and 200 years to degrade depending on conditions

whisky, our local water allows us to make the world’s softest cashmere products while using very few chemicals compared to other countries.
A luxurious blend of wool fibres, from four of the leading wool-growing countries associated with
@campaignforwool
, was created exclusively for the 10th anniversary scarf. The scarf comes in three colour options, with each reflecting at least one of these countries.
Blends can be made of different colour of the same fibre or of the same fibre or of different types of fibre, e.g. cashmere and merino or cashmere and silk.

On this day in 1851 we bought our first bale of raw

fibre from F. Buxton of Basinghall Street, London. In the late 1850s, we developed our own dehairing machine, replacing the previously hand-performed task of separating coarser cashmere fibres from finer down.
Rovings are spun to transform them into yarn. Spinning twists the fibres together to give them strength and prepare them for weaving. The thickness of the yarn is determined at this stage by drawing the rovings out to a pre-determined degree.

The carding machine works like a giant comb, straightening the fibres inpreparation for spinning. It converts a continuous web of fibres into individual ribbons known as rovings. One of our original carding machines from 1868 was still in use in 1993.
After wet finishing, the fabric is dried by passing it over rollers in a Tentering machine. The phrase to be "On tenterhooks" comes from the mill process.

Some of the dyes that we use today were developed as long ago as 1856. There are currently around 7000 shades in our colour library, ranging from soft subtle tints to strong, vivid hues.
We are proud to announce that we are now a contributor to the ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) programme, a collaboration of brands and manufacturers working together to eliminate hazardous chemicals from the textile supply chain.
Founded in 1797 by Alexander Johnston, Johnstons of Elgin is the second oldest family business in Scotland.
By 1811 carding, spinning, weaving, dying, dressing and pressing of woollen cloth were all done at Newmill.
