Chronic and enduring mental health issues and acting to change the poor culture within services .
Acceptance without resignation.
Live without appeal .
My GP just unexpectedly called , she was made aware I was in difficulty and did a welfare check to see how I was .
The NHS shines through the individual brilliance of its people .
@gmcuk
Can I ask why the GMC persued this case where there was no suggestion of risk to patients ?
Considering the GMC casually dismisses far more serious referrals where there is the potential for risk to a large number of patients from registrants it would seem curious failing in

It take a lot to get me miffed , but this article is unpleasant at best and this attitude from some professionals who seek to minimise mental health suffering is unprofessional .
Todays "moody" child may be tomorrows suicide .
Some patients with mental health issues can be;
Dishonest , difficult , challenging or manipulative .
Some mental health professionals can be ;
Dishonest , difficult , challenging or manipulative .
Sometimes people can be ;
Dishonest , difficult , challenging or manipulative .
One of the joys of Twitter is watching people who have little or no knowledge of a subject trying to "educate" people who are leading experts in their field.
A few months back I promised an elderly neighbour I would tidy her garden for her birthday .
Managed to scrounge some quality astroturf and other bits . Just a few finishing touches to make .
She's 89 tomorrow and very happy 😁
I wanted to try and quantify why I felt recent contact with one CMHT has been so much better that two other CMHT's and Crisis teams.
1. Time - I never felt any of the contacts were rushed, I never felt pressured to end a call so they could move onto someone or something else..
One of the silliest aspects of NHS complaint handling is the complaints teams seeking and accepting medical advice about complainants from the very staff being complained about for being negligent .
Its beyond reason.
I wonder how many people are in tears worrying about this , having panic attacks, fearing homelessness or suicide m
"Disabled people must work from home to do ‘their duty’, says UK minister "
A question popped into my head this morning ;
"What makes a good NHS complainant ?"
Almost immediately my mind turned to Sharpe and the series of the same name .
The ability to stand and the ability to fire 3 rounds a minute in any weather !
You have to be able to stand
Today was a big week for me .
An NHS person who was involved in my complaints contacted me and showed great humanity over what had happened . She was only the third person to show any genuine decency over what happened to me .
This meant a lot , I need to see humanity.
My mental health is mine alone , you are simply a visitor to my world . If I let you in , if I trust you and share my world . Treat that like a privilege and not a right .
I'm not just a case , I am human.
As a
#psychiatrist
, what would you want me to know about your perception of
#mentalhealth
, society and life that you believe will make me better at my job?
Please add and retweet. X
I'm not sure if anyone else has tried applying for a blue badge since they relaxed the rules to allow for " Hidden disabilities " ?
I learned today my application which was supported by my GP has been successful.
Things are changing .
I've been challenging Southern health NHSFT over their defensive culture for years .
"There is a “culture of cover-up” in the NHS and “ingrained defensiveness”
Ombudsman finds ‘culture of cover-up’ in NHS when patients are harmed
CCG letter this morning overturning the persistent and unreasonable warning they gave me .
I'm just going to accept this letter and the apologies at face value.
It was unjustified , I am a very pleasant , polite and reasonable person.
The very idea that a patient can follow the correct complaints process and make allegations of dishonesty against a nurse and then not only have the complaint not go through due process , but be told their complaint may be libellous is not something the NHS should be proud of .
@Nat_blossoms
Dreadful letter , I really dislike where they have written "apparent suicidal behaviour "
Have you read the NHS own website ? towards the end .."or you feel that you may be about to harm yourself, call 999 for an ambulance or go straight to A&E."
It is quite common for people in
#mentalhealth
crisis to call services asking for help , yet not disclose the full extent of risk or suicidal intent plans .
Often this is due to fears over how the services will react and what action will be taken, for example fear of sectioning
I've tried to tweet about this a couple of times but deleted , I dont have the words.
A severely depressed 38 year old man ended his life today.
This didnt have to happen.
R.I.P.
It doesnt quite seem right having the head of an organisation that investigates very few concerns and appears to have authority bias in helping cover up failings is discussing other organisations covering up complaints .
Sometimes I feel people talk of lived experience roles as though its simply as case of picking a random service user and voila we have an instant expert on mental health .
We can be quite different you know , with vastly different experiences , knowledge and views .
What are you supposed to do when the ones with all the power are hurting those with none ?
Well for starters, you stand up. Stand up and tell the truth. You stand up for your friends. You stand up even when you're all alone.
You stand up.
North Country
Honestly- just seeing NHS E recognising the existence of discriminatory practices /attitudes and un -evidenced beliefs puts a big smile on my face .
Slow progress is still progress .
Today my local
#mentalhealth
trust offered me the needs led -person centred care I have been asking for since 2016 .
I will not waste this opportunity .
More than slightly tedious seeing senior NHS peeps pronouncing their shock over the Lucy Letby repeated failings and talking of improving and learning .
Today has been difficult , quite overwhelming the sheer number of NHS and regulatory staff who are tolerant of mistreatment of patients and dishonesty/ cover ups .
Vulnerable service users are told to take responsibility and persecuted if they try to get help or complain .
Yet health care professionals are gifted with a "no blame" culture which allows then to evade any responsibility , even for causing harm .
It may be the case that many mental health professionals feel so secure it enables misconduct and mistreatment of patients and contempt for their profession.
The lack of accountability is a problem.
@DrAdrianJames
Well played for having it taken down , it may have been a mistake letting this one through , but its the minset behind this sort of thing that needs addressing .
I think the NHS sometimes treats complainants like the service is a victim of the complaint/complainant.
Rather than the complainant might be a victim of the service.
Struggling to get
#mentalhealth
support and being labelled a "frequent caller " or "High intensity user" is a signal to all services to abandoned your rights and treat you as a nuisance , as opposed to a human in need .
It is an invitation to bullying that must end .
The NHS can be a bit quirky .
It does seem peculiar that serious complaints can be made about very senior staff , and those same staff make decisions regarding the complaints .
Credit where its due . For the last 22 months I have benefitted from amazing support that meets my needs and preferences from a Southern health NHSFT CPN and my GP .
Over the last 22 months I had not had any unscheduled use of either mental or physical health services .
We see the term "Anti - Psychiatry " quite often and without any clear definitions I wanted to make it clear I am definitely not "Anti-Psychiatry ".
I am
Anti- mistreatment of patients , especially vulnerable ones.
Anti -Dishonesty
and
Anti- cover ups .
At todays workshop , I asked a mental health professional who the experts in mental health are ?
She gave a great answer " the service users are ".
I was quite proud of myself for holding back and not saying " then why are you doing all the talking ?"
For anyone working in the
#NHS
, I would like to share that at 8pm tonight all 50 residents at our sheltered housing scheme were clapping and cheering in doorways or at windows .
All with varying degrees of Ill health, all united in appreciation .
It was very moving .
“She had a supportive family, she had a nice flat, she had a nice car, she was doing exactly what she wanted to do in life. She had a voice, she was able to speak and advocate for herself as a medical professional. If she can’t get help, what the hell hope is there for anybody
People who have been through NHS complaints .
Do you feel the outcome would have been different if your were more involved in the process ?
Maybe If you had more time to actually discuss the case /points /issues with investigators ?
"It has been assumed that people who have been injured as a result of poor medical treatment will want financial compensation. In reality, evidence suggests that an explanation, an apology and reassurance that the incident will not be repeated are more important to patients."
I need to spend more time thinking about those who have loved me and care about me .
I need to spend less time thinking about those who do not care about me or others .
It was upsetting watching the judge's sentencing remarks regarding Lucy Letby .
The harsh reality is we have some extremely unpleasant people with access to the vulnerable . We also have a system that often doesnt care about serious failings , abuse and misconduct .....1
"Miss Thompson said Michelle had expressed suicidal thoughts during her time in the unit, but the risk had been thought to be low."
Woman took her own life while in Hull mental health unit
I entered our sheltered housing scheme in the local Boroughs "in bloom " competition . It's virtual again this year so entered with this image .
Lots of community involvement here and I love that.
Often when people tweet that they are struggling or in distress /crisis I dont have anything useful to say , but I do like to acknowledge what the person is going through by liking the tweet .
If it were me I would like to know people see me .
What do others think ?
Wonderful day today , moved to tears following random contact and apology from another NHS person who accepted they let me down .
The best part was the detailed explanation of how they changed their input in complex cases .
Thank you for what you did today It helps
Had some great news today👍
Mental health services will provide ongoing support again that meets my needs and from the same person to ensure continuity.
Hopefully this will enhance the support provided by my GP to provide stability
Looking forward to a fresh start for 2022😃
My Local
#mentalhealth
trust is preparing a letter "holding its hands up " to past failings in my case , and taking some responsibility for other NHS bodies behaviours towards me due to poor advice they provided .
I feel this is an honest step forwards for the trust .
The CEO at Southern health NHSFT has said my allegations of dishonesty against staff is defamatory , he also said my allegations and complaints are causing staff demonstrable harm .
I have twice suggested he take legal action against me , however he will not do so .
We need to instill compassion within
#mentalhealth
health services.
Compassionate staff need a baseline understanding that every contact they have or indeed fail to have , may result in life changing or life ending consequences for a vulnerable person .
There are now so many NHS staff involved in my complaints , it is inconceivable there has still been no investigations and or many are stating complaints have been investigated when they clearly have not .
4 Chairs , 6 CEO's , numerous executives , a Head Governor , several
For years my suicidal thoughts were made worse by the misconception that if I killed myself there would be an investigation / inquest that would lead to change and remedy the failings in my care so others would not suffer as I have .
Silly me .
Mental health nurses day so I would like to show appreciation for my current CPN.
Shes a good listener ,supportive , has a calm and gentle way about her and can be funny too.
Many thanks for the help .
#MHNursesDay
My thanks , appreciation and respect to all the NHS Whistleblowers out there , those who had the courage to do the right thing , even at personal cost .
The director of nursing at Southern health once wrote to me and said " Sometimes good people do bad things ."
We can all accept that as slightly imperfect human beings this will happen .
However in my world , good people own up , apologise and try to remedy the issues .
Massive thanks to the vaccination team at Fareham community hospital. Super efficient.
Asked to wait 10 minutes after in a busy waiting room , as soon as I mentioned Agoraohobia etc I was taken to sit in a quiet and empty corridor . 🙂🙏

SHFT QI conference.
The day is over , immensely proud if myself .
I spoke from the heart and had quite a few people moved to tears and thanking me .
It's so important to keep everyone in touch with the human element.
Thank you to those who supported me today .
"Doctors had a professional “duty of candour” to be open with patients and families when things went wrong, but Behrens said “there are lots of examples of people not being told the truth. The fines for duty of candour are tiny and it doesn’t change behaviour”. "
A few days ago I emailed some staff who have been involved in my case this year , I politely said I felt they had all failed me and invited them to reflect on what has happened .
Surprisingly I have yet to receive any apologies .
@Shrink_at_Large
Thats one of the parts that really stuck with me .
The one that suggested she should be in prison and have a good thrashing ? Then went and hugged her .
Unbelievable .
Probably right the inquiry also examines the impact of PHSO's failings and how that allows the cover up culture to flourish .
Letby inquiry must also examine NHS ‘cover-up culture’, says ombudsman
