They referred me a patient for depression assessment because she was grumpy and wasn't cooperative.
67 year old lady. They were right, she was grumpy. Answered me in monosyllables, refused to look me in the eye and just went on eating her bread while answering me.

Looking at the empty tables, I estimate 80% of the staff in the JKN offices are on leave.

Actually if I remember correctly, all canines will go for the throat when they attack to kill. When they accept you as a part of the pack and they see that you're in a vulnerable mode, e.g. sleeping, they'll protect your throat.

Since this has gained some traction and some people are cursing the children, I want to highlight that is not the intention of this thread.
We believe that for a child to treat the mother like that, there must be something wrong with the parenting as well. It's not a blame game.

I had no answer.
After discussion with my specialist, we diagnosed her with Major Depressive Disorder.
We started her on Brintellix. Good antidepressant and her children need to buy it for her because it's not provided by the hospital.
Maybe, they'll visit her when they buy it

Now, UMMC isn't like that. We made the decision years ago to open the gates to anyone. I've always thought that this is the way to do it. Did we get overwhelmed? Sometimes. But we also understand that it's hard to bring yourself to the Psychiatric clinic.

Don't get me wrong. This is a proof that this particular service is badly needed. But we are the only hospital providing this. Others require you to be triaged and if you're not deemed 'severe' enough from the brief assessment, you get an appointment up to three months later.

I will not pretend that I'm not anxious about doing what I did and the repercussions.

Trouble is Psychiatry is different. It's way harder to tell your doctor that you feel depressed and useless than you feel breathless going up the stairs. The stigma is real. But because of the blanket referral rule, you need a referral for both.

AFAIK no research had been published in medical journals that studied the mental health issues of the general Malaysian LGBT+. Research papers studying the men who have sex w men with relations to HIV and/or intravenous substance use exist but not the LGBT as a whole!

In the past two weeks, we have an average of 20 new patients a day iirc. This is more than some hospitals allow per week. Some were recommended to come by other psychiatric clinics even. One doctor sees about 7 patients a day and after the 5th, the exhaustion kicks in.

The study will be using self-questionnaires and an interview using a diagnostic tool to evaluate the presence of mental health issues. I will be the interviewer and I am the only one with access to any identifying data as to ensure your privacy and confidentiality.

Yesterday, we had 26 patients. The last patient was seen at 3pm. Last registration - 1130am.
Not so bad if that's all we do but we have patients in the wards, our own follow up clinics, referrals from other wards, procedures to do. We cannot cope.
