Ever heard of Jensen’s inequality, but not sure how it works? Here it is in a nutshell, illustrated with a thermal performance curve. See how, when temperature varies over time, time-averaged growth rate differs from growth at the average temperature, bc the curve is nonlinear!
I am so honoured to be a L'Oréal-UNESCO

How does mass migration of zooplankton occur in darkest part of the polar night, where there's no day-night cycle? Cued by moonlight, not sunlight! 🌖🌕🌙
Shift from 24hr cycle to 24.8 hr days (lunar-days!) in winter.
Yes!! Jensen’s inequality is a tenet of nonlinear averaging & really important in biology, where nonlinearities are everywhere 🎉
e.g. When temperature varies over time, time-averaged growth rate differs from growth rate at avg temperature (b/c of nonlinear growth curve) 🌡️🌎🌡️
Regular reminder - Pitfalls & fallacy of taking averages in ecology and evolutionary biology. Organismal performance at average conditions is seldom equal to ave. performance across a range of conditions. This is a basic property of nonlinear averaging

One suggestion for proposing experiments:
Make clear how you will interpret your results if you don't find what you predicted (i.e. "Based on hypothesis A, I predict B... If, however, I find C... then this suggests D")
Clear interpretations for all possible outcomes = stronger.
