The 7 councilors shown in red, actively and consciously voted to deny pending applications for 600-650 homes in Calgary's established communities. This is short sighted, irresponsible and politicking for the upcoming election at its absolute worst. This is BAD for Calgarians.

@SonyaSharpYYC That NoM received all the support it deserved. One single vote from disgraced councillor Chu. Political posturing under the guise of a "solution".

@sassystuff @SonyaSharpYYC I always aim for an honest, open conversation! Like any business, dev. needs to make a profit (12-18% typically) to secure financing and stay in business. It doesn't make sense to sell or rent much above market rates or people won't buy it. Like any industry, there is a balance!

@JCraig_Miles @SonyaSharpYYC I think that is a gross over generalization. There are plenty of phenomenal inner city developers who care deeply about building better communities and making the city a better place to live in.

@HelmleMerv65091 @SonyaSharpYYC I am a developer! Infrastructure upgrades are also required as the pipes age. It isn't only new development that drives the requirement!

@JCraig_Miles @SonyaSharpYYC Ah yes they collect the funds, but the proper process and structure is not in place so until recently, new developments were the main, if not the only source of infrastructure upgrades!

@sassystuff @SonyaSharpYYC These dollars also don't go towards profit, it lowers the price of the housing being delivered. The recent break in Marda Loop was from City construction and was very unfortunate. The businesses in That community are being crushed by the disruptions...

@JPuskas @SonyaSharpYYC What do you think funds the new infrastructure? New developments! The city relies on new development projects to pay for infrastructure upgrades in established neighborhoods. There is no fund or mechanism to replace it otherwise. No new development = no infrastructure upgrades

@sassystuff @SonyaSharpYYC That program shares the cost of infrastructure upgrades between developers and the city and there is a good reason for that! Why burden one housing project with a multiple block.long infrastructure upgrade? It doesn't make sense and makes housing less affordable!

@SonyaSharpYYC But your NoM literally says permits will not be accepted, therefore you are suggesting they will be stopped. New development is the main way infrastructure gets updated. Developers and end users pay for new pipes. Stopping permits will be detrimental to your cause...
