It was a Saturday evening in late January ‘18. After a day’s shooting at Preston’s former Indoor Market I sensed a spectacular sunset emerging. I legged it to the summit of the market car park. Cold and slightly knackered, I managed to compose myself and capture this shot.
Some people accuse me of portraying my home town of Preston in a bad light. I just try to document it as honestly as possible. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
I will continue to document it as I see fit.

Small world.
I posted the picture on the left on New Year’s Day. I took it around 10am ish.
I got a message from the gentleman in the photo. He said that’s me stumbling home after New Year’s Eve revelry. I had previously photographed him as part of my traditional pubs series.
Fight on my little bird.
Blackpool.
Dec ‘21.
I was photographing this derelict shop front when this lad approached and aggressively enquired about what I was doing. When I explained he soon calmed down and struck this pose.
I managed to capture his joyous transformation.
This Romany traveller family stay over in Preston every year on route to the Appleby Horse Fair. Over time I have gained their trust and they welcome me into their community and let me photograph them.
Here the head of the family can be seen relaxing with his grandchildren.

Dolly Birds...The lady on the right said “You can take our picture as long as you caption it Dolly Birds.” Consider it done.
I have been working as a stills photographer on the set of a local independent film called The Palace Diaries. It’s 2021 and we’re in the middle of a global pandemic, and yet there I was transported back to Christmas 1963 to photograph this atmospheric pub scene.
Ever since my Mum used to take me to wash my Nanna’s clothes at a launderette in Plungington I have been fascinated by the distinctive sights, sounds and smells which emanate from these unique social spaces.
I have documented every single launderette in my home town of Preston.
Since the beginning of lockdown it March I have been documenting the impact that Coronavirus is having on my hometown of Preston. From portraits at a safe social distance through to the impact it is having on local businesses.
1/2.
There’s a cocktail of adrenaline and apprehension coursing through my body as I’m about to enter yet another backstreet boozer / social club in my home town of Preston…
When I submitted the proposal for my exhibition
@HarrisPreston
I had to make a strong argument about why I thought it would be successful and which audience it was aimed at.
This week I received the attached message from the nephew of this gentleman in my exhibition.
Brilliant!
Community Spirit.
The gentleman in this photo was serving curry to the local community from the back of his van. He kindly agreed to having his portrait taken.

Angel of the Knife.
I finally got to see the amazingly powerful and moving sculpture that is the Knife Angel in Blackburn. I have framed this shot so that the cathedral spire replicates the sharpness of the deadly knives in this stunning artwork.
Since the beginning of lockdown I have been documenting the impact that Corona virus is having on my hometown of Preston. From portraits at a safe social distance through to the impact it is having on local businesses.
I’m saddened to hear the news about Gary Singh passing away. My thoughts are with his family. He was a long established and respected trader at Preston’s former Indoor Market.
I made this portrait of him which appeared in my 72:18 photography exhibition

There was a recent report in the local press about the Samuel Street flats complex in Preston being likened to the Bronx.
I have been documenting these flats for a couple of years now. Here are a selection of shots.
I was getting strong Gold Room vibes from the Shining whilst immersed in this abandoned Social Club.
I could subconciously hear the laughter and revelry occasionally piercing the dense smog of tobacco smoke swirling around from yesteryear. Times which will never be repeated.
In late 2016 I embarked on an extensive photo documentary at Preston Indoor Market This culminated in a hugely popular exhibition at the Harris Museum. I learnt so much about photography during this project. I continually strive to become a better photographer.
You can mingle freely amongst hundreds of other households in shopping centres etc, but you’re not allowed to sit at a socially distanced table for a pint.
These draconian and contradictory measures will decimate pubs. As each day passes my photos take on added poignancy.
After a long day spent documenting the former Indoor Market I headed back to the car park. I saw the sky dramatically changing through the concrete slats on that cold winter eve.
I legged it to the summit just in time to capture this stunning Preston sunset.

DIVIDER OF OPINION.
(Preston Bus Station).
Divider of opinion, keeper of buses,
Your beauty is brutal, you always enthral us. You’re as ugly as sin, should be razed to the ground.
Divider of opinion, homeward bound.
I have been documenting the launderettes of Preston. Characters abound watching and waiting, the aroma of detergent, and the clunking and whirring of the machines. I’ve always had a strange fascination with these social hubs. I finally completed the set last week.

Christmas 1963.
I have been working as a stills photographer on the set of a local independent film called The Palace Diaries.
In this pub scene the gentleman is reminiscing about his courting days at the Palace Cinema in Longridge.
New Batteries.
10/2/18.
This shot was taken at the close of play on the very last day of trading at Preston’s former Indoor Market. This gentleman was a stalwart at the market for many many years.
I took this shot at the recent Jamaican Independence Day celebrations at Jalgos Sports and Social Club. This club plays a vital role in Preston’s Caribbean community. I have been documenting it for the past few years.

I love you from the bottom of my persil case...
Oh Sheena, oh Tracy, oh Hayley, oh Shaz, I washed these smalls for you...
This shot forms part of my photo series which documents every launderette in my hometown of Preston.

Did you know that I have photographed every social club in my home town of Preston?
These have included Labour Clubs, Conservative Clubs and WMC’s. All of them have their unique codes of conduct.
This long term series is an important documentation of Preston’s social history.

I have been documenting life in St John’s Shopping Centre in Preston. The majority of my photos have been taken during lockdown and Tier 3 restrictions.
Preston North End’s billionaire owner Sir Trevor Hemmings sadly passed away last week. He was a generous and humble man who shunned the limelight.
At Saturday’s match PNE fans donned their flat caps in honour of the headwear which became synonymous with him.
During lockdown I captured this couple reenacting that famous scene from the film Titanic. Quite ironic considering their location, down the side of the former Odeon Cinema. This building was destroyed by a fire last week and is currently being demolished. A very sad ending.
Since the former Skeffington pub closed I have always thought the deteriorating exterior ‘paintwork’ resembled a camouflage pattern. Anyway I was taking a photo of it when this lad walked past in his camouflage coat! Can you see him? I played for this pub’s pool team in the 90s.
Waiting to be served at Jalgos Sports and Social Club in Preston. This club is an important part of Preston’s Caribbean community.
Open weekdays and weekends from 6pm.
My Mum used to take me to a launderette in Plungy to wash my Nanna’s clothes. The distinctive sights, sounds, and smells always stayed with me.
I have now documented every launderette in my home town of Preston.
