🔬 Major new findings on STEM gender gaps in @ScienceMagazine: Looking across institutions over time, physics, engineering & CS show stark divides—gaps are closing at selective colleges but widening elsewhere. w/ @akking_jo [<--🌟 on the job market 😉]

@rjsmith169 @gema_zamarro @Mereycat @lina_anaya @BrookingsInst Except in these data, women don't do better overall in math; rather, the women who major in these math-intensive fields significantly outperform the men in these fields. And low-achieving men are unexplainably (by student factors) joining these fields.

@lina_anaya @gema_zamarro @BrookingsInst Do you have a link to that work? I'd be interested to see it.

Your mid-pandemic reminder that the gender (and gender-by-race) inequities in education and society pre-pandemic will likely be there post-pandemic. And this one is bad for the quality of STEM fields too.
Math-intensive fields like physics and computer science have a gender problem, writes @JoeCimpian: The men are worse at math.

New paper! Findings: *Very low-achieving men choose math-intensive college majors as often as high-achieving women. *During college, these men are retained in and join these majors. *Extensive set of student factors cannot explain this. @ScienceMagazine

Sarah Lubienski's essay on writing proposal reviews applies to journal reviews too: 1. focus on the main point(s) 2. be blunt, but constructive 3. be consistent (not repetitive) in comments to the authors and chair/editor @AERA_EdResearch @ERjournal_AERA

Please see Jon's tweet and link below, then ask leaders in higher education, National Academy members, and organization leaders to sign the letter by August 12. Help increase (and measure) LGBT visibility at the university level. 🏳️🌈
U.S. STEM surveys include many demographics but not LGBT info. We’re urging NSF to do so: The data would allow institutions to better address LGBT disadvantages in STEM. Consider emailing letter to org leaders & NAS members in your field to sign—due 8/12!

@mpolikoff Ha! Maybe. And according to that table, seems like they're concentrated in charter schools. Hmm...

Important new work by @michaeljkieffer and Karen Thompson on accounting for progress of multilingual children. In common ed accountability, reclassification from EL to fluent English proficient cream-skims away progress made by part of group. Need to design better systems.
