Random gym thought: A year ago I was about 30lbs. heavier. Now, as I’m lifting 30lb. dumbbells, I realizing the weight that I used to carry around with me all day is now the weight I’m using to get stronger. 🤔

Today’s Mindset: A break isn’t a “break.” It’s necessary and productive. Taking a break is often seen as unproductive. It’s actually one of the more productive things you can do. “Gotta grind 24/7 bro” is a fallacy and something only “influencers” say. Rest is productive.

Today’s Mindset: “I’m busy” is just an excuse to do the things we want to do & avoid things we know we should do. Saying “I’m busy” makes you feel better. It doesn’t solve the problem. Next time, say “I chose not to prioritize it.” See how it feels.

Today’s Mindset: Barbell Theory Everything is a muscle. Brain, emotions, skills, etc. Like lifting a barbell, consistent reps against moderate weight will grow that muscle. Not enough weight causes atrophy. Too much weight can injure. Push against something heavy today.

Today’s Mindset: This too shall pass. No matter what you’re going through in life, remind yourself, “This too shall pass.” Typically used for perseverance through hard times, it reminds us that nothing is permanent. For good times, it’s reminds us, nothing is permanent.

Today’s Mindset: Enjoy it. Whatever you do, enjoy it. Even if it’s something you don’t want to do, find a way to enjoy it. Turn it into a game. Listen to something enjoyable while doing it. Dreading something is in your head. Therefore enjoying it can be, too.

Today’s mindset: “It’s whatever you’re used to.” My dad used to say this to me all the time. I’d cringe at how he would eat beans and dumplings and greens. “It’s whatever you’re used to.” What do you want to do that seems hard? Remind yourself, it’s whatever you’re used to.

Examples from my own life: Swapping whole milk for almond milk in my coffee. Is it as good? Nope. Did I get used to it? Yep. Waking up at 5am. Was it hard at first? Somewhat. Did I get used to it? Yep. Humans are so incredible at adapting.

Cognitive biases inhibit decision making. Think about this scenario: An NFL head coach was not hired because he is physically imposing. He may have been the best for the role, but the cognitive bias said he couldn’t be hired because he works out too much.

Today’s Mindset: Nobody can do your pushups for you. We can hire people to do just about anything for us. Drive us around, code our app, market our product, mow our lawn. But we can’t hire someone to do our pushups. The only way to improve yourself is to do it yourself.

Today’s Mindset: Maximize over optimize. I’ve spent a lot of time recently trying to optimize my life. Nutrition, exercise, time spent, etc. Sometimes we have to flip to maximize which is sheer brute force to volume. Example: Stop planning times for tasks. Burn thru my to-dos.

By the time we’ve “optimized” something, we could have been done and on to the next thing. Overthinking can lead to delays and less optimization. Instead, as said in Bull Durham, “Don’t think, just throw.” As noted by Daniel Kahneman, the brain is made up of System 1 and 2.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but don’t put your kids food in silicone bowls or containers. The silicone absorbs soap and the food absorbs the soap flavor. Don’t believe me? Lick the bowl/container. Be prepared to be grossed out.

Today’s Mindset: Box checking. Box checking is often seen as a derogatory term. “Oh they’re just checking the boxes.” But sometimes doing the basics and checking the boxes are exactly what’s needed. Today, I’m finishing all the little things unchecked.

Survival tip: Car windows are made to NOT shatter. Side windows need sharp force to break. You can see the guy with a hammer can’t break the driver window. Every car should have a window punch tool zip tied to a place reachable by the driver.

When a car crashed into a light pole and caught fire on a highway in Minnesota, multiple good Samaritans stopped to try and rescue the driver before it was too late. They eventually managed to get the person out just as the car was engulfed in flames.

Today’s Mindset: Eliminate activation energy. Activation energy is the energy used to get started. Starting a new task takes 5x-10x the energy of actually doing it. How much energy can you save by *just doing*? In sports we say, “Don’t think, just throw. Don’t think, just go.”

This is as straightforward and no nonsense as you can get when it comes to losing weight and getting in shape. I’m partial to #19 because the mindset isn’t, “I’m going on a diet.” The mindset has to be, “I’m a healthy person,” and your actions will follow.

The concept of 1000x relationships is terrific. Some relationships are 1:1 in returns. Others are 1000x. If you don’t invest in the 1000x, the rest doesn’t matter. Example: If my marriage is broken or thriving, it impacts every other piece of my life. Has 1000x impact.

How to start a business in four steps: 1) Get LLC at legalzoom 2) Take docs to bank to get bank account. 3) Use docs + bank account to get a payment processor (stripe, etc) 4) Ask a stranger to give you money to do something for them. Voila. You have a business.

2 things here: 1. At this point I had the option to wallow in my misery or move along. I took a second to acknowledge I tried. Then said, “Welp, can’t change it. Move on.” I picked up the cup and then realized I could just order it and have it delivered or make coffee at home.

Biking is a great way to burn calories. Lifting weights gave me variety and rebuilt strength. @FitbodApp took the thinking out of building a workout. I started slow. Getting into the garage with my exercise gear on was the goal. From there it felt much easier to just do it.

Note that the front windshield is laminated glass and the punch won’t work on it. The punch is designed for use on tempered glass, which in vehicles are typically the side windows. Not all side windows are tempered, especially in newer vehicles but usually the back windows are.

Skill barbell. Deliberate practice on hard things forces growth. Flow state engages when something is challenging but not impossible. Growth in anything happens against resistance, not sitting in comfort. Do hard things consistently and get better at doing hard things.
