What a wholesome day with the family receiving a BEM for the vaccine confidence work I was involved with during the pandemic. I’m a British Bangladeshi working class doctor who works in predominantly British Bangladeshi and/or working class communities. My work fundamentally was based on representation. Going forward we must continue to move towards a medical workforce that reflects the population we serve. Dr Jahangir Alom BEM

I think the tide will turn on alcohol policy by 2030, maybe 2035 in the UK. There is a huge amount of evidence against alcohol and any proven health benefit is usually industry funded. We Brits are not ready for change yet but we should have more honest and open debates about its damage to society and the burden on our healthcare system.
NEW: Today, I’m releasing a Surgeon General’s Advisory on the causal link between alcohol consumption and increased cancer risk. Alcohol is the 3rd leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S., contributing to about 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths each year.

Thank you @ASHK_YASHK for the hospitality at the Young Academy of Sciences Summit. In a post truth era we, scientists and doctors, must continue to engage with public policy to restore the trust in science and look for innovative solutions to today’s societal problems. @UKYoungAcademy @GlobalYAcademy

“I am treated in a fair and inclusive way, irrespective of who I am.” It has been an honour to contribute to the Health Inequalities workstream for the upcoming NHS 10-Year Plan under the co-chairmanship of @BolaOwolabi8 and @jacoblant. It was great to work with such a diverse group of leaders. If anything, this exercise has helped inform my own clinical practice, and I thank my fellow group members for advocating for the marginalised communities they work with. I look forward to seeing how the inequalities strategy fits into the wider plan and how we can work towards a fairer and more inclusive NHS. @NHSEngland

A pleasure to be at the launch of the flagship undergraduate medical schools widening participation report, ten years on from the “Selecting For Excellence” report in 2014. The report inspired much of my own widen participation work, particularly the outreach work I did as a student and the little opportunity I get to do as a doctor. The “Fostering Potential” 2024 report shows the huge leaps we’ve taken to embrace social mobility in medicine. However, we have a long way to go in the postgraduate resident training realms. Maximum points for specialty applications can cost upwards of £8000. That’s not including the cost of a resident doctors time to participate in extra theatre lists, clinics and research. Those who can afford time and money are thriving whilst the rest of us are left behind. I don’t have the answers for postgraduate widening participation but we need the same ethusiasm and drive to address this issue. If you’ve got ideas or influence then let’s chat in the new year. @gmcuk
