Rough draft … this probably looks fairly complete, but this is the point where I’ve got all the colors roughly down in the spot where I want them. Now I step back and consider what final changes are needed before calling it done.

My mother was an artist and my father was a research meteorologist. My dad would marvel at a storm for the mechanics at play while my mom would see the sheer visual beauty of it all. Somehow, I think I got a little piece of both of them.

I lost my dad recently. He played a huge role in my artwork and I’ll be posting a few paintings this week that connect me to him.
He was a research meteorologist and I’d spend my summers with him on weather projects studying hail. Every storm I paint has a piece of him in it.

A few years back, my dad confessed to me that he was afraid to die. I painted this painting to give him comfort as he journeyed from here to there. It hung next to his bed until he passed.
Russian Olives were my dad’s favorite trees.

Painting in progress … cloud work. I like to keep my clouds pretty rough and suggestive. It’s very easy to get lost in the details of clouds so I prefer large chunky strokes that define the shape. Once the rest of the paint is down, I’ll return to this area if it’s needed.

Painting in progress … after the warm sky colors I layer on the darker cool tones. For skies, I find it best not to dwell on any detail and instead try to capture the large color shifts and movement.

Rough draft … almost done here, but I need to step back and consider how all the colors and values are working together. I’ll use the iPad app Procreate to import this photo and digitally try out several changes. I like to focus only on the changes that help the overall impact.

Painting in progress … when depicting plants, grasses and trees, I prefer to get all the darkest colors down first. I’ll now layer on lighter and brighter colors using a combination of thin glazes and thicker paint. Wish me luck! 😉

I’ve got some work to do here yet, but I’m pretty close. I’ll likely remove the unfinished flower to the right of the main flowers and cut down the thin yellow band in the distance. I also need to make a few passes across the flowers and leaves. Fingers crossed!

New painting started … I tend to spend more time on my initial sketch than other painters. In some ways this serves as practice and it should already be “working” to some degree.
I sketch with Premier brush markers from Prismacolor in various strengths of Light Umber.

Painting in progress … when painting a dynamic sky like this, I like to add the blue sky last. My blues are quite opaque and easily cover other colors. I can carve out better cloud shapes as desired.

One of my favorite scenes. I absolutely love the Central Coast of California and this painting was inspired by some of my favorite spots along the coastline. I quite enjoyed walking along the bluffs at Montaña de Oro State Park near Los Osos.

On the easel … I’m not overly concerned with details at this point. My main focus is to get large areas of color blocked in.

Painting in progress … adding substance and details to the schoolhouse. Just like Hopper, I love to paint buildings lit up by the sun.

Painting in progress … blue sky. Blues are more opaque than my warm tones, so they easily cover them up here. The transparent yellow tones underneath have no chance. This allows me to carve the cloud shapes that I’m after without introducing undesirable green tones.

Rough draft … I like to get paint down in roughly the right spot before I worry too much about any one area. To help me, I’ll bring this photo into Procreate and try out a bunch of different ideas digitally. I focus on the changes that actually help and skip the rest.

I’m working on a Claybord panel from Ampersand. I prefer this stiff smooth surface over textured canvas. I’m sketching with Light Umber Premier Brush Markers from Prismacolor. These glide so nicely over the Claybord surface.

Painting in progress … as I get closer to the foreground I like to make sure that my darkest colors are in sync with with each other. This means that the darkest parts of the trees in the middle ground are a step lighter than the darkest part of the rocks in the foreground.

Painting in progress… I love to portray depth in my paintings. One trick for doing so is to include overlapping elements at different depths. The three different land forms depicted so far each have their own value and saturation.
