A few Kentucky Derby thoughts 9 days out…
If you like Forte, you have to like Mage at a far better price.
If you like Tapit Trice, you have to like Verifying at a far better price.
No named rider on Kingsbarns yet is… odd?
I’m becoming a huge, huge fan of Derma Sotogake.

Saratoga.
@michaelsrwilson
thought he was one of the best colts in the entire sale. Listen to him explain why 👇🏼👇🏼
For novice fans of horse racing, this is a must watch so you can learn what to look for!
Quick pass through Belmont card and some thoughts…
Caravel has her work cut out for her from Post 12 in the Jaipur. How she went off at 40-1 in the BC, we’ll never know.
Rooting big time for Cody’s Wish.
Angel of Empire is a single.
Best card top to bottom so far this year.
Pretty surreal to see my work get aired in front of 20k people
@TheNYRA
Saratoga over the weekend. Thanks to
@nmrhof
for helping to put this together and to
@DRFLivingston
&
@RAMONandSHARON
for taking the time to speak with me. Go to the museum and check out these exhibits!
NYRA CEO David O’Rourke said yesterday in front of NYS lawmakers the Breeders’s Cup has given (at least) a verbal commitment to return to Belmont Park should it go through with its modernization plan and renovations in the coming years.

9 years ago I took
@KarenTararache
to
#Saratoga
🎪 for the first time. I had to do something meaningful to get her back there every year in case she didn’t like it. So I asked her to marry me on the roof. She said yes. 9 years and 2 kids later we’re here just about every weekend.
I think Mystik Dan is up against it in the Preakness.
I hope I have to eat those words, though.
Can you imagine a Triple Crown on the line in Saratoga?!?!?
Took a trip to see some of my Triple Crown heroes at
@coolmoreamerica
today. Thank you for the hospitality! American Pharoah looking as majestic as ever.
Who knew throwing a birthday party for a 2 year-old at
#Saratoga
🎪 would be so exhausting?!?!? We’re beat but we walked out cashing the double to close out the card with a few exactas along the way. My wife
@KarenTararache
is an absolute trooper and a good time was had by all!
‼️CAREER UPDATE‼️
I’m the new lead writer at Legal Sports Report!
@LSPReport
is the gold standard in covering the sports wagering industry. After 8 yrs at the NYS Tax Dept, I’m returning to journalism to write about things I enjoy: sports, gambling, business & a bit of politics.
$54.56M was bet on the Preakness Saturday. It’s the lowest handle in the last three years.
Down 16% from last year and down more than 20% compared to the $68.7M bet on the race in 2021.
I’ll say it. I love stacking all the Grade 1s on a single day. I love the 9+ hour marathon card. And I love it even more that I only have to drive 15 mins for it this year.
Remsen Stakes winner, and Belmont Stakes probable, Dornoch hanging out in his stall at Danny Gargan’s barn this morning on the backside of Saratoga’s main track this morning.
Bummed we won’t get to see Flightline at
#Saratoga
. He’s training up to the Pacific Classic instead, but here he is after dominating the Met Mile at
#Belmont
earlier this month.
My dad’s been taking me to the track for 30+ years. It was finally time to return the favor. Paddock access, jockey photo (thank you
@jockeyfranco
) + a view from the winners’ circle at
#Saratoga
🎪 He boxed the entire field in an exacta then grabbed a Coors Light on the way out!
Sports wagering isn’t here to save horse racing. The thought that a “shared wallet” is somehow going to turn sports gamblers into horseplayers is so silly to me.
Racing needs to market itself as a gambling game skill of skill, not a place to dress fancy and have a cocktail.

Week 2 of
#Saratoga
🎪 kicks off today.
@jockeyfranco
talks about the increased level of competition with new riders on
@TheNYRA
circuit this summer. Plus, what he believes has helped him be successful so far in 2022.
Digging into Saratoga, here are my three pre-meet predictions.
1: Cody’s Wish wins the Whitney and it’s the talk of the town all summer
2: Chad Brown wins the most graded stakes during the meet
3: Horses training up to the Travers, skipping a July prep, won’t win the Travers
US horse betting handle reached $1.06B in July.
It’s a ~7% decline from July 2022 total of $1.14B.
Year-over-year horse betting handle has declined for 10 consecutive months, according to figures released yesterday by Equibase.
The undefeated filly, Maple Leaf Mel, owned by Coach Bill Parcells, is back racing today in the East View Stakes at Aqueduct. Haven't seen her since the summer when she won a
@nytbreeders
stakes race at Saratoga. Excited to see her run again as we inch closer to The Spa!
Drove past the track this weekend. Got me thinking about the summer, so I went home and watched some videos I did at Saratoga last year. This was one of my favorites for the team at
@GoFinalFurlong
.
#Saratoga
It wouldn’t be great for payouts, but it would be high drama if Fierceness kicks away from the field as Sierra Leone begins to gobble up ground in the stretch… the two of them look each other in the eye inside the 1/8th pole… all alone… the one with the most guts wins.
Our girl Spicy Tuna makes her debut today at AQU!
Here’s a little hype reel I put together for the
@GoFinalFurlong
team while she was still working in Saratoga.
Good luck! 🔥🍣
Putting in our final preps for the Saratoga summer content plan. Really looking forward to following Jorge Abreu (and several others!) around at The Spa. You’ll get an all-access pass. He’s got some nice two year-olds!
#Saratoga
When you think of the greatest Preakness winners, Rachel Alexandra was fantastic. But, man, how can you watch Afleet Alex in 2005 and not think that was the stuff of legends. Nearly falling at the top of the stretch, only to draw off and win by 5 lengths!
Another Kentucky Derby thought…
Are Forte stans not the least bit concerned his BSF has declined in both starts this year and he hasn’t matched his best figure at 2yo from the BC Juvenile?
(Comments open for the “LOL Beyer Speed Figures suck!” crowd only)
Wrapping up an awesome couple days covering the Kentucky Derby.
Next up, seeing all the best horses walk off the truck in Saratoga for Belmont weekend.
Until next time Churchill Downs ✌️

With big race Jim
@JimGazzale
at Saratoga, check out our released Saratoga Saturday show on
@PastTheWire
TV 👍 & we'll see ya every Saturday during the meet
Had the pleasure of speaking with
@JuniorandKellyA
today on
@PastTheWire
TV. He reflected on his recent milestone, 2,000 wins, and just how sweet it was to him after pushing through years of injury.
Listen to when he started to think 2,000 wins was possible 👇🏼👇🏼
Sights and sounds from Saratoga’s Oklahoma Training Track yesterday, complete with an over-the-top dramatic music bed as well as post-workout bath shots. Enjoy!
UPDATE: NYRA/FanDuel have a deal
“We are pleased to have reached a resolution that will allow FanDuel/TVG customers across the country to wager on NYRA racing now and moving forward,” said Tony Allevato, NYRA Chief Revenue Officer.
Original story here
This year’s Preakness features the Kentucky Derby winner (Mage), a G1 winning 2yo (Blazing Sevens), a G3 winner (First Mission), a smattering of slower listed stakes winners and a maiden winner (National Treasure).
Who’s excited?!?!
Phase 2 is complete… take a good look now. It’ll be overrun with jackets, snow pants and muddy shoes in a matter of hours. This came out really good with the horse silks wallpaper peeking through.
I’m working on a guide for betting the Kentucky Derby for
@PastTheWire
, so this weekend I was digging back through some
@Brisnet
figures… in their two final preps before the derby California Chrome and Justify were throwing down some ridiculous numbers. My gosh they were freaks!
5 inches of snow on the ground in Saratoga with a few more on the way.
Perfect day to sit inside watching horse racing & college hoops. And by sit inside watching horse racing & college hoops I mean smoke a lamb leg for 6 hours & finish the house projects my wife has been
Love Like Crazy broke her maiden yesterday at AQU!
Thrilled to be along for the ride from Day 1 when
@GoFinalFurlong
purchased her at the
@nytbreeders
2022 Saratoga Sale.
Excited about my first win as an owner and grateful to everyone at Final Furlong for making it possible!
NYRA is changing its admission policy for Saratoga Race Course this summer.
$7 in advance, $10 at the door. NYRA is eliminating different price points for Clubhouse & Grandstand. Single admission to access entire property.
Sprinting for picnic tables appears to be unchanged.
The most important Kentucky Derby trend heading into Saturday… this is my 3rd trip to the Kentucky Derby.
2009- Mine That Bird 50/1
2022- Rich Strike 80/1
T O Password and Catalytic are probably live on Saturday.
Charge It was back on the work tab this week for the first time since September.
Breezed 4f in 49.34 at Palm Beach on January 1. If healthy, I think we can expect him to be a major player in the handicap division this year.
I stayed up way too late last night watching Palace Malice race highlights.
🥱🥱🥱
My favorite horse of all-time. I followed him around like a groupie in 2013 and 2014.
Handicappers, listen up! Some simple body language cues from a horse can tell an important story.
@SaffieJosephJr
says observation is the key to training. Here’s what he’s looking for in a workout and in the paddock. S/O to
@SaratogaChocCo
for helping us put these video together!
The
@Brisnet
current class ratings on turf is the best angle that no one talks about.
At Saratoga today, every turf runner who crossed the line first was in the top 3 of current class.
R3: Russi ($5.50)
R6: Deep Satin ($3.70)
R7: Battle of Normandy ($7.00)
R9: Star of Mystery
There’s nothing “player friendly” about a 15% takeout. It’s simply the least worst option, but only because takeout on every other wager is north of 20%.
If I was King for a Day in racing, here’s how I would address takeout, which in turn would drive more handle for racetracks.
Beer and hot dogs at 10 AM after a 13 mile “fun run” through Brooklyn with my big sister!
Home in plenty of time for the Preakness Day P5 from Pimlico.
What does the future hold for Maryland horse racing?
I explore the recent drop in Preakness handle and how parimutuel betting compares to sports betting in MD
Will the Preakness stay at Pimlico?

Isn’t this already FREE through the Yahoo! Sports app? Pretty sure I’ve been watching live local and prime time games for $0 through Yahoo! for several years now.
A few more photos from yesterday’s stallion show at
@rockridgestud
! Seeing Disco Partner up close was so cool to me. I remember watching both of his Jaipur wins from the third floor clubhouse at Belmont Park.
Quick Kentucky Derby thoughts…
What a horse race!
Fierceness wasn’t up for the fight, as suspected.
Sierra Leone lost nothing in defeat. Gutty effort, easy to root for.
Forever Young, tremendous race horse.
The horses I built my bets around finished 2,3,4 which = $0.
My bold prediction for 2024:
Horse betting will get worse before it gets better.
Outside the Kentucky Derby & Belmont Stakes, I think all the marquee events on the horse racing calendar suffer significant drops in handle. Tracks will be forced to make difficult decisions.
Only
This Fox Sports coverage of the
@BelmontStakes
has been excellent. It’s been hitting the right blend of casual fan and loyal horseplayer, in my opinion. The more betting focused broadcast on FS1 has been great too. I’m digging it.
I asked John Sterling for his autograph outside Jacobs Field in Cleveland. It was 2007 or 2008.
I drove 3+ hours from Dayton to see the Yankees. After the game, I saw him walking through the players parking lot. I met him right outside the fence.
“Mr. Sterling, huge fan. I grew
When he asked lawmakers why they didn’t have questions about those horse fatalities or the lack of attendance, lawmakers simply said, “thank you,” and moved on to the next panel.
Seems to me this money to move forward with Belmont’s modernization plan should pass quite easily.
