🧵We read all of Trump's Executive Orders on #border, #asylum, and #enforcement, so you don't have to. Follow along for some of their most relevant provisions and some of our initial questions.

I see the papers already being typed. Not in my wildest guesses I would’ve thought about this.

President Trump has instructed officials to come up with a plan to prioritize refugee admissions of “Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unjust racial discrimination.” On his first day back at the White House, the president indefinitely paused the U.S. refugee program.

The Trump administration does not want to externalize the US asylum system (as it tried to do during its first term); it wants to wipe it out completely. Of course, denying people the chance to seek safety, a human right, goes against US law and intl. law and will be challenged.

“What if, in reality, there weren’t two distinctly opposed and bickering visions of border security, but two allied versions of it?” Must-read article at The Border Chronicle by @memomiller.

“For many people, going back to Venezuela means going back to death, going back to political repression, going back to being unable to feed their families and provide for their kids,” I said to @KTSMtv.

Check out this week's #FronteraDispatch, where we cover the US pressures on Latin America, how local communities are organizing to protect their migrant neighbors, and the Venezuelan case. Plus a new section, #ElRinconcito, where we'll share pieces of culture that inspire us!

@HopeBorder This is what migrants had to say about Mexican immigration enforcement agents and US migration policies. The full results will be published soon in a report with our @JRSMex colleagues.

To state the obvious, tariffs will severely impact border communities and their local economies. Expect more people seeking alternative options, with at least more internal migration in Mexico.

@David_J_Bier Unfortunately, I fear that the latest Biden asylum ban hardened those standards. The latest 28-day rule made it almost impossible for the asylum ban to be lifted.

I would not be surprised if we have a quid pro quo between the U.S. and Venezuela as this article explores: deportations in exchange of oil at the expense of democracy and human rights (including the rights and lives of those potentially deported).

Remember, there will be plenty of misinformation and fear campaigns intended to cause anxiety. We need to take the time to pause, understand what's happening, inform our communities without fear, and move forward accordingly. I hope you found this helpful.
