A man calls the newsroom tonight cussing me out for our coverage on protests. I respond "First of all sir, I'm a person and don't deserve to be cussed at." He immediately hangs up. The lack of kindness in a time where unity and community are so necessary is disheartening.

It’s been a long day and I am still working on processing this…
When Renee was first elected she used to call me asking for advice on how to get the media or anyone to quote her— she never stopped fighting for her voice to be heard..
It is with heavy hearts we share news today that Renee Van Nett, mother, sister, daughter, friend, second term City Councilor & past Council President, and Red Lake Band member, passed away surrounded by family in Duluth this morning after a brief battle with cancer. She was 52.
