My patient today asked me if I was “courting” at the moment, and when I replied no, told me “it’s okay you have vibrators 🤷🏼‍♀️”. She was 78 years old. And that is why I’m grateful for masks hiding my face 😂

I remember the first time I saw this algorithm it gave me shivers and I hoped in my career I would never have to face a situation requiring this. The first paramedic on scene at Manchester bombings should be given a bloody medal not vilified by the press for clickbait.

So we’ve recently changed from 12 hour shifts to 10 hour, and let me tell you after just a few weeks of it so far, my work / life balance and energy levels are so so much better. Even with a late finish I’m not exhausted going home. Have time to actually get some errands done.

One day, when I am a creaky old paramedic with a bad back, I’m going to write a cookbook for shift workers. Recipes ranging from pre shift optimism to mid block of 5 delirium. Survival food for overworked. What would be on your list?

Consultant in a super busy ED still took the time (~5mins) to talk through a CT head with me and discuss what I could see / pathology (and lack of) and it was so rewarding. Little nugget of calm clinical discussion amongst the chaos.

Unique ambulance crew skill: knowing exactly where you are on the approach to hospital (whilst in the back) by the combination of potholes / roundabouts / turns etc. Ie for my local ED it’s a roundabout, 10 potholes (bone shakers), another 2 roundabouts, a left turn and a bump.

Taking time off “sick” because I’m mentally not in a good place to be caring for other people and once again feel it would be easier and much less guilt inducing if I had a broken arm. I firmly believe you cannot be a paramedic half arsed / tapped out. There are no easy days.

Happens all the time but I’m always impressed with how well ambulance crews that may never never have met each other before work together (especially with big sick patients). I’m sure it happens in other areas of healthcare too but damn I can’t help but think we’re good at it.

Don’t get me wrong I would never want a different career but sometimes when you’re not feeling quite 100% but not ill enough to be off sick it would be nice to do a job where you can just “do emails” and be in close proximity to amenities such as a kettle and a toilet.

Ambulance crews shouldn't need to be "bare below the elbows". The scene they picked the patient up from had more pathogens than Porton Down, a watch strap is not going to harbour anything worse than their boots!

If, in this life, I can find a partner who will earnestly tell ambulance crews how wonderful I was, how every day without me is a day too long, then I have truly found love. I wish the deceased could hear how their loved ones speak about them to us. They break my poor old heart.
