5/6 We simulate plastic runoff to the MedSea for 3 @OECD plastic policy scenarios from 2025 to 2060. We find that 0-plastic leakage policy by 2060 does not lead to 0-plastics in the MedSea, because the large MMPW pool on land (180Mt) continues to disperse to the MedSea.

4/6 We use satellite obs of MedSea litter and MMPW runoff in the model. Despite 3-fold higher per capita MMPW in N-Africa+M-East (20 kg/pp/y), the higher rainfall rate in alpine S-Europe drives strong (88%) plastic runoff from S-Europe. See Cozar et al.

3/6 In the MedSea plastics budget and box model, the 7Mt of plastics in the marine environment directly constrains present-day terrestrial mismanaged plastic waste (MMPW) runoff of 0.3 Mt/y for the year 2015. This number lies in the range of previous estimates (0.1 – 0.65 Mt).
