@jimmyja40397308 I'm aware, but he seems to be critiquing the USA, while also giving it the authority to define the thing he says isn't his authority to define. That's what's confusing. It would make sense if he said "the nation decides the criminality of someone who enters illegally."

He doesn't say deportation violates human dignity. He says it "damages" human dignity. What does that mean? He says you shouldn't identify the illegal status of SOME migrants as "criminality." What does that mean? To what threshold/extent?

@jimmyja40397308 @AFpost I think he's just saying it takes a profound love and charity to sacrifice for a foreigner. Which is true... but only if you aren't neglecting your family to help them (like the good Samaritan).

@jimmyja40397308 I agree, but the extent to which we can exercise our right (as a nation) to deport people on a mass scale is pretty unclear. We never put a statute of limitations on illegal entry. The Church hasn't either. Again, WHO DECIDES?

@jimmyja40397308 @AFpost He uses the word concentric, which is confusing people. He's saying that you don't STOP loving all humanity to love your family, you don't STOP loving your nation to love your Parishioners. The maturity is that you are operating at all levels at all times, but still in order.

@jimmyja40397308 Commentary can blur the lines of right and wrong when it's this broad. It seems the only thing clear is that the authority of national security and immigration enforcement is the nation. So, tacitly, is he admitting the state is the authority deciding alien criminality?

If there's one respectful critique I'd offer the Holy Father, it's that I (as an American) am often confused by his language. He leads his teachings with exceptions, not rules. He doesn't put boundaries or thresholds on what constitutes an exception. I wish it was clearer.
