Labelling children as 'abnormal' or 'disordered' helps services gatekeep resources but the benefit to children's health is questionable. We need a new approach that recognises needs through a strengths-based lens, takes a contextual approach & celebrates difference.

The psychiatrist, Prof Allen Young, has just been interviewed by @BBCr4today about antidepressants without his long-standing financial ties to the pharma industry being declared to listeners (who presumably assumed he is an independent, expert voice). Due diligence please BBC.

The dx of βpersonality disorderβ is disproportionately given to women. (White) women are 75% more likely to receive it compared to men. It has been shown to prevent women from accessing appropriate mental health support and impacts how other public services engage with them.

As long ago as 1988 an article in theΒ British Journal of PsychiatryΒ reported research showing that psychiatrists treated patients with a diagnosis of personality disorder as more difficult & less deserving of care.Β Little has changed since @weareplatfform

@weareplatfform are currently campaigning for an urgent review of the use of personality disorders. Platfform are not alone in their criticisms. People can become "stuck" in a system that does not understand them π°π¨

The committee appointed by MP Kim Leadbeater to scrutinise her #assistedsuicide bill, and to consider changes, has voted 14-8 AGAINST allowing the Royal College of Psychiatrists to give expert evidence on issues including coercion & capacity.
