Each month Jefferson County Invasive Species Management focuses on a noxious weed and provides information to help identify and control it. This month's weed of the month is hairy willowherb (Epilobium hirsutum). Hairy willowherb is a semi-aquatic, herbaceous perennial belonging to the Onagraceae family (Evening Primrose). Classified as a List A noxious weed, it is mandated for eradication. First identified in Jefferson County in the early 2000s, it has rapidly spread across the Denver Metro area, thriving in wetlands, drainage areas, and wet rights-of-way below 6,000 feet in elevation. The plant regenerates in spring from its roots, rhizomes, and stolons, forming dense colonies that often displace native vegetation, including cattails. To manage hairy willowherb, herbicides are the most effective option. If near water, ensure the product used is specifically labeled for application in or near aquatic environments.
