Strategas' Common Man CPI rose 3.4% y/y - greater than the headline figure of 3.0%. Common Man prices exceeded headline prices in 43/48 months during the Biden Presidency. Prices increased 23.1% while wages increased only 17.1% during the period.

There will be those that evoke the Great Depression in any discussion of a “trade war.” But it should be remembered that Smoot-Hawley came in the context of a significant decline in the money supply, greatly increased regulations, and higher taxes. Very different today.
