If you told me yesterday that the
#USWNT
would win gold & do this fist-bump format coming off the bus and asked me to describe Trinity Rodman getting off said bus, I think I would have been able to describe it with total accuracy
I can't speak for Marta, but I feel very confident that she would want her final game for Brazil to come in a major final against a good version of the USWNT. Marta is a certified smoke-wanter, she wouldn't have it any other way.
There's nothing in sports that is more of a power move than a goalkeeper saving a penalty, then stepping up to take a penalty successfully, and then as I type this, save another penalty. Naeher does all of it like it's nothing.
#USWNT
I think most absolutist statements in soccer are embarrassing, but Kristie Mewis is the preeminent locker room party legend & documentarian of said locker room parties in American soccer. The experiences she has conveyed & captured are more important than the Mona Lisa.
If I were Rose Lavelle, knowing how she's perceived from all sides, I would never ever shut up about how I won a header cleanly over two Canada center backs, including Vanessa gd Gilles, in the ugliest conditions possible
2 knee-jerk
#USWNT
reactions:
- We've underrated Morgan for years now, but I couldn't find a space for her in my 18. Right call.
- Purely on soccer merits, not sure Albert would have made even a 23-player roster for me. IMO Yohannes, Hershfelt & Flint all have stronger cases.
You think she's cooked, you think they can't find her today, her touch is off, she's too tired, and then Rodman scores that goal in that moment. Different kind of player, different mentality.
#USWNT
There is something really astounding about how often, since day one as a pro, Trinity Rodman will seem tired or to be carrying a knock/cramping up, and then suddenly she's like jk guys I have like 25 more sprints in me, we're good
#USWNT
's emphasis on giving Albert minutes is a thorny issue over the alleged (but unseen) work done to grow after her homophobic/transphobic social media activity. It's also tricky on soccer terms.
If she can't impress today, you have to ask if it's ever gonna happen.

If Mal Swanson puts any more power, even 0.1 more calorie burned, into that pass, Smith isn't in a place to convert the chance. Given the fatigue present, that's an incredible pass to pull off.

Inbox: Washington Spirit have surpassed 150,000 in attendance this season for the first time ever. Per the club, they're the first non-west coast
#NWSL
club to pull it off.
10 of the top 15 attendance figures in Spirit history have happened in 2024's 11 home games.
Andi Sullivan post-game (with a laugh, to be clear on tone): "It's rare that I would say that this environment is less stressful than our club environment, but that's the case for me right now, so I'm just super excited to get into camp."

The first game of the entire Olympic soccer competition is done and we already have a drone scandal, confusing answers from a gold-medal winning coach, a game with 15 minutes of stoppage time, and fans throwing fireworks at an opposing bench
To be honest, I think the
#USWNT
hit like 65% of its peak in this tournament. There is *a lot* of room to grow, and to maximize what's already on hand.
One thing that kept coming up last summer is the idea that the rest of the world was closing the gap on the USWNT, and what didn't get talked about enough is that the coaching change means the gap is actually going to grow.
I don't have more details than what's here but Ashley Sanchez and Trinity Rodman spent some World Cup downtime as detectives, or pranksters, or prankster-detectives.
Enjoying learning what Lily Yohannes has learned in this
#USWNT
camp, which appears so far to be "find Trinity Rodman whenever possible."
(this is good)
Y. Michele Kang is not yet the Spirit’s majority owner, but
#NWSL
has effectively set the stage for the club’s full investor group to choose her over Steve Baldwin:
The United States is more likely to bring home a gold medal in soccer than any other country, and we still have people saying "no Olympic soccer for the U.S."
I'm a big "let's not make too much of a deal about an armband" truther but for the
#USWNT
, who it goes to really matters internally...and it just went to Girma.
One reason this game has kind of fallen apart with the potential injuries is fatigue. Tired players can't be as precise, and that leads to late tackles/rash choices. There's a reason players & coaches didn't want this
#NWSLChallengeCup
schedule.
Soccer journos dividing themselves up into two camps:
- It is dumb to try the spicy cramp drink
- It is dumb to try the spicy cramp drink, which is why I I'm going to try it
At the Spirit's Pride Night and the number of people enthusiastically grabbing the Pride flags the team is giving out (and they are not small flags) really speaks volumes to where this team was vs. where they are culturally

5-time World Player of the Year Marta scoring from the center circle, at 4pm on a Wednesday, in a baseball stadium, in a game that had 11 minutes of first-half stoppage time, is the American soccer experience
Inbox: Spirit announce plans to honor returning Olympians.
- Gabby Carle & Leicy Santos to be recognized before kickoff on Sunday
- All 4 USWNT players to be recognized before kickoff of Spirit vs. KC on 8/25
- 8/25 will also feature a pink hair-braiding station on the concourse
During the World Cup, Emma Hayes wrote an article for the Telegraph saying the USWNT didn't have enough players like Rose Lavelle that I've been thinking about pretty much once a week all year.
Honestly figured Sophia Smith would never get a red card in her entire life, but compliments to Ion for actually spotting her hiding the ball under the Thorns bench.

Sam Staab on the end of the Segra Field era for the Spirit:
"To put it plainly, that is the worst field I've probably ever played on, and the fact that we're professionals playing on that field was atrocious."

Late to this but looking at Naomi Girma's performances during the voting period for the Ballon d'Or list and not seeingher name is causing my brain to want to fly out of my skull
The Spirit have spent all season as the 3rd horse in a title race that people have largely treated as between 2 teams, but it's a 4-1 win over KC at Audi Field today. Spirit climb to 2nd in

This isn't a deep thought, but the tension that exists between diehard NWSL fans & the clubs/league is going to continue as long as teams make their moves based on valuing getting slightly better over anything else.
It's a little frustrating to see the relaxed, confident, high-pressing version of the
#USWNT
only now, at this point in the tournament. We might never know what was up in the early games.
I do not understand how a kick at that height, then raking down someone's shoulder and hip, got a VAR check, much less wasn't a red card. Intent not an issue at all here, this is a one billion percent red card.
Good on admin for shouting out Mewis, who makes an aggressive choice here in a moment where it's exactly what was needed. Didn't bring it down, just one-timed the pass forward ASAP
Respectfully, I disagree with this. The Olympics are the easiest time to cover women's sports, & there's a ton of drive-by coverage from outlets that will vanish from the scene.
The outlets who aren't BSing you are going to still be covering these athletes next week.
That Rodman goal is 90% Midge Purce, who in a system that gets her into that space on the edge of the box (whether she's right back, right wing, or whatever) is going to cook.
#USWNT
Something new from the Spirit: the team's media resources include audio pronunciation files for most of the team (15 at the moment), with players saying their own names and many adding their preferred pronouns.
#NWSL
Rodman has had an on-again, off-again back injury since her rookie year (anyone that was out at Segra can recall her going down with a scream once from this). Based on how the trainers were treating her, it seems 100% like a recurrence of that.
#NWSL
You get the sense watching Orlando that Marta knows there's a trophy in this season. She's always given it everything but 2024 it's like, she's found more to give somehow. The emotion, the intensity, the willingness to take fouls. It's nuts.
#NWSL
Stunner from the Spirit. I've said this to other reporters: due to the rarity of Staab's skill set, the argument was there that she was the least tradeable player on the entire roster.
Spoiler: I spoke with Rodman this week, and the first thing she told me when I asked how she's doing was "I'm tired" and it was both a joke...and not a joke.

Croix Bethune gets her first
#USWNT
cap, capping off a start to her pro career where she's already been an

Team of the Month player 3 times & is on the brink of breaking a league record held by Tobin Heath.
You know, normal stuff.
Kristie Mewis has brightened up the USWNT significantly since coming on. I think Gautrat's bias towards team shape was less favorable given how deep the Czechs play in this 442. Mewis is taking risks positionally & with the ball, & it's changed the game.
As a person who gets to cover a lot of Trinity Rodman games in person, I feel like my week isn't complete unless I see that exact turn used on the goal to open space. It's just a part of my life now, like DMV traffic.
#USWNT
Podcasting pals: please, as an act of mercy, let me come onto your podcast to talk for roughly six hours about this USWNT Olympic performance. My outlet for these things is gone and you can't just talk at someone in the grocery store or whatever, they ask you to leave
A thing about Alex Morgan that we all learned in 2019, when she played like 95% of the World Cup on a bad knee, is that her ability to play while hurt and still figure out how to make an impact is superhuman
Vlatko Andonovski says Andi Sullivan & Kelley O'Hara will not start tomorrow, citing the need to build up their minutes as they both continue to come back from injuries.

The Olympic soccer tournament could be a lot better if it weren't designed primarily to be exhausting. They almost made these teams do this with 18 players!
Per Google greater London appears to have 5 Dunkin' locations, though all of them are on the west side of town and West Ham plays to the east in Dagenham
It has felt like this for quite a while: this team has the feel of a team that is too stuffy, too formal. They need the soccer equivalent of someone slipping the DJ a $20 and asking for some music people can dance to
One thing you learn covering the Spirit every game is that when Rodman doesn't get a call, the next 2 minutes are the time to feed her the ball ASAP, because she *will* get revenge with a pass, move, or shot.
It's funny how easy it is to tell that the Trin Spin is coming.
Everyone in the entire world knows it's coming, Yasmim probably had time to think "oh no I think I have made an error to be isolated like this" before it happened...and then it happens anyway.
Big night for just a piece of advice for men in soccer, which is that when your woman colleague is talking, you will continue to live if they finish their point before you begin talking again
New NWSL fans, here's an early lesson in being frustrated with USSF's relationship with the league! This game is in direct conflict with a weekend in which 8 teams have games.

The

An England team at home & closer to full strength than the US out-performing the
