We kicked off Edge Esmeralda today with 200 folks coming in from all over. It felt like the first day of college for a multigenerational group. This month is going to be magic.
@JoinEdgeCity
is officially no longer just an idea.
Zuzalu kick-off was a year ago! What a crazy, beautiful journey the past year has been. It was built to be an experiment and a public good. A year later we've already seen so many pop-up villages built. Here is to a future of network cities and reimagining how we live.
Join us in Istanbul Oct 29-Nov 11 for the next Zuzalu experiment. We're creating a pop-up village within a city. Learn more about why it's worth joining at
I've resisted having an online presence & focused on IRL connections. I've reached a point where I sense there is value in sharing thoughts online. I'm committing to tweeting about community building for 60 days. IF it benefits my IRL life, I'll continue. If not, back to IRL only
Final celebration for Edge Esmeralda last night was such a wonderful culmination of a weird, wonderful, mind expanding, relationship building, and fun month. Thank you to everyone who made it so memorable.
@JoinEdgeCity
first pop-up village in the books.
We watched an eclipse this weekend and hosted a 200 person festival around it. If you're trying to build new cities. Don't just practice throwing dinner parties, practice hosting continually more complex gatherings.
Simone Wilson, a local reporter in Healdsburg, shared her feedback about her Edge Esmeralda experience.
We're just a bunch of "“techno optimists” with a shared goal of leveraging modern technology and ancient wisdom to save the world, or at least make it a better place to

@JoinEdgeCity
created it's first activation. It was one special community artwork that's the first of a long series to follow. Beyond thankful to everyone who pulled it together and those that came through to bring it to life.
👀 Zuzalu was an incredible learning experiment, we're going to do our best to open source as much of our learnings as possible over the next few months. Excited to see what others build!
Strong relationships are built during unstructured time with people. As we get older, the amount of unstructured time with friends Diminishes. Living in close proximity to friends increases unstructured hang outs.
Takeaway: LIVE CLOSE TO FRIENDS.
I love how mountain towns allow for endless outdoor exploration AND create restrictive living environments that force everyone to live in close proximity. There is a reason most mountain towns have such a great sense of community.
Thanks
@balajis
for engaging and the teams behind the passport! Zuzalu does feel part network school, part intentional community for builders who want to push the frontier and make a positive impact.
Funding Public Goods is one way crypto is changing the future. We’re still early building the tools to do it in a decentralized way.

Edge Esmeralda is coming to life in June in NorCal. We couldn't be more excited. Come co-create a walkable, healthy and mind expansive environment with 150+ other curious, kind and brilliant people.
We are incredibly excited to announce our next popup village: Edge Esmeralda!
It will be hosted in Healdsburg CA, June 2-29.
It is a place for people who believe the future can be better and are actively working to make it happen.
If you’re curious to join, read on!
The Edge City team is growing and we're continuing on the hunt for a perfect production lead. You need to be pretty far out on the crazy spectrum for this role but it's a dream job for a techno optimistic community builder:
I'm so excited about the Edge City Fellowship program. Traditional schooling isn't for everyone and we're hopeful to build a viable alternative for bright and curious youth.
Announcing: The Edge City Fellowship
For: Ambitious 18 - 21 year olds
What: Spend a month co-living and co-building with the world’s most impactful innovators.
Honored to represent the incredible

community today
@FundingCommons
. We're on a mission to foster a global network of communities to advance humanity by creating playgrounds at the intersection of free and open technology, science, health and social innovation.
We’re excited to share a few highlights from the programming calendar of Edge Esmeralda, our popup village in June! 🌞
The programs are diverse, ranging from community health to neurotech to AI and many other topics.

land projects consistently slow down social innovation. I hear, "I've bought a piece of land and we're going to build an amazing co-living community that'll be the future of how people live" more times in a week than I can count but seldom see results of people living
The

Happy Mothers day to a mom that has taught me the value of boundless energy, relentless grit and that living a life in service of others is one of the greatest joys. Life with you has been such a gift.
Can't wait to watch the magic unfold this week. Could not be more excited to bring
@JoinEdgeCity
to life with such impressive and kind collaborators.
We want to push the edge of what's possible as a conference. This week will be all about catalyzing connections, expanding minds
We have an amazing program lined up for Denver!
Instead of traditional sponsorships, we are working closely with institutions and upcoming projects whom we trust to cocreate a delightful experience.
We’re commemorating each with custom art ❤️ Details on program below!
Cool community cafeterias are totally underrated. I don't particularly want to go to a restaurant everyday but I'd totally go to a cafeteria to see all my friends everyday.
This last week in Austin has been filled with an overwhelming sense of support from friends helping me for a big transition ahead. It's a reminder that investing in your tribe is one of the highest leverage things you can do.
Everyday at
@JoinEdgeCity
Esmeralda we're exploring a new restaurant in town together for dinner to provide business to many local vendors. The Wurst tonight was excellent!
Cities are the platforms we build our lives on and it's totally possible with the technology we have today to coordinate so much better in them. We need more social innovation alongside new physical infrastructure.

🌟 Zuzalu Snippet: Small Spaces, Valuable Connections. With 200-300 residents and a daily breakfast spot seating 70, joining strangers at tables became the norm. Limited options broke social barriers, fueling serendipitous connections that may not have happened with 200 seats.
When imagining the future, it’s easy to fall in the trap of holding everything constant except the one thing you are focused on. In reality, the future happens manifests itself as the intersection of many changes.

We are building a Solar A-frames in a burned redwood forest and it is even more fun, crazy, and beautiful than any of us dreamed. Thank you everyone for the help so far!!!
A fun thought exercise: What type of governance structure should a mission like OpenAI's have to continue doing this work and not get caught up in politics and power struggles?
We're a week away from and our calendar is looking busy for week 1:
I'm most excited about a focus on workshops, experiences and experiments, and a real emphasis on DOING and BUILDING things vs just thinking and talking.

Technically you could live hopping from one pop-up village to the next for the rest of 2024.

Curious what the first week of a popup village is like?
Janine and Timour give a quick rundown of what to expect at the start of Edge Esmeralda and why the first few days are often attendees' favorites 🌞
@JanineLeger
@timourxyz
We've strayed from our tribes towards more isolated, individualistic lives. Nomadic tribes, to agrarian families, to industrialized workspaces, now remote work's alluring freedom that often serves as a trap for isolation. How do we use freedom to be more intentional in community?
Camp Austin, my first large scale event, changed my perspective on community building! Witnessing 150 adults play like kids, I realized the immense value of creating spaces where adults can be 100 percent themselves to foster connection.

A fun life metaphor for Sunday. Life should look like a friendship bracelet vs a few pieces of yarn. An interesting balance between family & friends, work, health and hobbies. The more you intertwine them all, the more interesting your day-to-day becomes.

If today you're done with standing in lines at the brussel airport, tomorrow & Tuesday you out talk yourself attending sessions, happy hours and dinners, then I suggest on Wednesday you join the run club for a change of pace:
Community is a public good. Community centers and religion are two examples that somewhat fit this model. Those building strong modern age communities should think of what they are building as a public goods.
Even though I get to work with you everyday, it's still cool reading your thoughts on pop-up villages

We’ve done this in Austin and doubled our yard space in a suburb that is known for having tiny yards. We have more space and less yard to look after. Big win!
If you could somehow coordinate a group of friends to move next door to each other, or for more people to actually befriend their neighbors, then this idea becomes so appealing! It's a tricky coordination problem, though. Will be interesting to see if we can solve it for anyone.
