This was supposedly D.O.A.
But it keeps going up as most other films tank. Now pushing $150m worldwide even though it’s already streaming. Give new films room to breathe, ok? The old rules no longer apply.
Universal's The Fall Guy grossed an estimated $1.19M on Friday (from 2,826 locations), which was a 27% decrease from the previous Friday. Estimated total domestic gross stands at $77.28M.

Note to journalism students: this story is just a Page Six item. Its only byline is Fox News. Its only sources are three people who posted on Facebook. No reporter bothered to talk to a live person. Mamas, don’t let your kids grow up to be lazy.

Most of the books are being banned from H.S. libraries for students 14-18
One mom: “My high schooler is being denied access to books that interest him. Not all students have the means to obtain books, so the school library may be their only access point."

Things to know about “Meet Joe Black”:
—is 170 minutes long
—includes the line “What a lovely name, Joe!”
—makes Brad Pitt say “The taste of your lips and the touch of your tongue—that was wonderful.”
—needed 4 credited screenwriters to come up with this stuff.
Walking out of “Dawn of the Dead” was an unprofessional and stupid thing to do, and anyone offended by my review is right. It’s a mistake I never made again.

You’re quoting us out of context to suit your purposes. I liked “Blade Runner” much better than this indicates. And the version available today isn’t the one we saw in 1982. Enthusiastic reviews on the aggregation sites are about the improved 1992 reissue.
The disdain for criticism in its most softball era is actually astounding to me. Pauline Kael eviscerated Blade Runner with such élan that a devastated Ridley Scott had the review framed. Without her critique, we likely never would have seen the Final Cut.
Baez went to school with privileged white kids and pointedly identified as Mexican, though she’s of mixed heritage. This comes up in “Joan Baez I Am A Noise,” a documentary that’s unmissable even if you missed it. Still streaming.
Could Colin Farrell be subbed in for the now-uninsurable Joaquin Phoenix? He’s fearless. He’s a total pro. They’re almost the same age. And Farrell’s already done publicity for “The Penguin,” which starts streaming in a month, so he might be able to do it.

For everybody loving these clips, look up the whole interviews if you have time. It’s her extended cat-and-mouse games that are so wild. These actors didn’t get away with just a curveball or two.

Short-term effect: a huge Neil Young hit.
Long-term: we helped re-elect Richard Nixon, which was the last thing we wanted to do. Don’t forget.

I have never seen him perform. I had one chance to do it before he was famous—and I was stupid enough to pass. Gonna fix that this week, nearly 51 years later.
The fake Beach Boys will be touring this fall. Mike Love is the only original band member involved, and a controlling interest in The Beach Boys’ intellectual property was sold off earlier this year.

This is a thorough overhaul with a 21st century mind-set. Just describing its reinvented opening scene—which emphasizes ambition, not family—to one guy was enough to send him through the roof. YOU CAN’T BE TIRED OF WHAT YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE.
R.I.P. Peter Fonda. McGuinn’s solo version of his “Ballad of Easy Rider” was released on the film’s soundtrack in—can’t get away from it, can we?—the summer of ‘69. A full Byrds version came later. 50th Anniversary screening and live concert scheduled for 9/20 at Radio City.

Unless I missed it, nothing explodes. But there’s the Civil War. Does that count?
It’s about yearning to be a writer and has some pure viciousness in it. Not all frills and buttercups.
Please be careful with your precious selves. Please wear masks at airports. I didn’t know it was back and now I have it and so do my kids and grandbabies. It feels a lot like flu. If I hadn’t tested I wouldn’t even have known. We’re all wiped out. Boy, I know now.
We have alarming news.

Baez has been singing this Prine song about age and abandonment since 1975. It has never sounded more beautiful than it does at this difficult moment. Bless them both.
R.I.P. Herb Stempel, a pawn in the early days of rigged game shows who helped usher in an age of manipulation and lying. Played brilliantly by John Turturro in Robert Redford’s “ Quiz Show” as a man brought down by naïveté, then hell-bent on revenge.
Nobody else could have made Harvey Weinstein lie as badly as he did to Howard Stern. The spat Stern staged between Donald Trump and a gossip columnist has to be read to be believed. A review of Stern’s celeb-filled new book on the art of the interview:

. Here’s Barbara Lynn covering the Ray Charles hit, but how many Black female singer-guitarists do you remember from the mid-60s? Wrote most of her own songs, had a couple of hits. Toured as a backup musician but this’ll have you wondering why.
Congratulations to the immensely talented Greta Gerwig, winner the USC Scripter Award for her brilliantly nuanced, deeply felt reimagining of “Little Women.”
With the lovely and gracious Eleanor Coppola plus Diane Lane, who starred in Coppola’s 2016 “Paris Can Wait.” She was well known for her documentary “Hearts of Darkness” and for preternatural patience with her husband’s creative adventures. Matriarch Extraordinare. R.I.P.💔
Almost here: “In Restless Dreams,” Alex Gibney’s monumental documentary about Paul Simon’s 70 year career in music. Part 1 starts streaming tomorrow. Part II arrives a week later. Don’t miss it!

for visiting yesterday w. “In Restless Dreams,” his revelatory Paul Simon portrait. It drew a packed house. Such an innovative look at Simon’s lifelong journey of musical discovery, and it should be in theaters! But it won’t. We were very lucky.
Dear Academy:
It's still only December. You have more than enough time to make sure that this year's "In Memoriam" montage honors Dan Talbot, whose nearly 60-year career exhibiting and distributing great art films influenced generations. Please give him his due.

Hi, Google. I’m not on your list. I’m the only woman who was ever the NYT’s sole chief film critic (other than Renata Adler, who did it very briefly). When I’m dead I won’t care. But I’m here, and you’re not very nice.

Everything about this Scorsese profile is beautiful, earned and true. But it’s also a case of Oscar campaigning kicked up to murderous high gear. Subtle message: Marty could die soon. Give him that damn thing or we’ll shoot your dog.

“The Shootist” isn’t mentioned much, but it’s one of Don Siegel’s best films. It was J. Wayne’s last and starred him as a dying gunfighter. Superb cast: James Stewart, Lauren Bacall, Scatman Crothers, even twentyish Ron Howard as Bacall’s son. Elegiac western. Aces.

Happy Birthday to the illustrious Walter Murch, a protean force in advancing the art of film. He’s best known for inventing sound design (watch the opening sequence of “Apocalypse Now”). Another credit: he worked on the first NY radio broadcast to showcase 20-year-old Bob Dylan.
Happy 80th birthday to the legendary Walter Murch, born in New York on 7/12/43. Murch won Academy Awards for sound for APOCALYPSE NOW & for both sound & editing for THE ENGLISH PATIENT. His additional six Oscar nominations include sound for THE CONVERSATION & editing for JULIA.
Happy Birthday to Mark Knopfler. I first knew him for his “Cal” and “Local Hero” soundtracks, not Dire Straits. We were born on the same day,
same year. Sir, you’re the greatest. Please outlive me.
Singleton planned to re-team with Taraji P. Henson on a film about Emmett Till, the 14-year-old victim of the horrendous Mississippi hate crime. Henson was to produce and play Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmett’s mother. It had the potential to be Singleton’s most ambitious project.
A few reasons to be grateful for John Singleton: the greatness of BOYZ N THE HOOD, the lasting visions of BABY BOY and ROSEWOOD, the breakthrough roles for Ice Cube, Taraji P. Henson, Regina King, Morris Chestnut & Nia Long, among others.
In appreciation:
Senators get 16 hours to ask questions. Wouldn't they like to ask about documents?
If McConnell gets his way, they won't see any documents before their questions.
Even if documents are allowed later, they can't ask a single question about them.
Americans deserve a fair trial.
John Dahl’s “The Last Seduction’ has turned up on Prime and Tubi. Miss it at your own peril. It was never easy to find even though it’s one of the 90s neo-noir greats. Maybe Linda Fiorentino’s character scared people. She thrilled me.
