The house was a sprawling structure that held so many rooms, it could hold the entire population of the town & still have space left over for the goats. Creeping up to the #attic , in search of the next clue, Rory kept his eyes open for any plunder in the many cupboards. #vss365

For the purposes of this particular quest, Rory had a very special #guide . A cat. Rory wasn’t aware that cats made particularly good guides and his fears were realised as the cat led him on a meandering journey that led him right back to where he had started. Twice. #vss365

The missive remained #unread on the table, exactly where Rory had left it, days before, when he decided to, instead, pursue a different set of more lucrative quests. That was the thing about the game, everything waited for the player. Even urgent letters to stop a war. #vss365

This group dungeon proved to be one of the longest and most laborious ones the group had ever encountered. Certainly, not among the most interesting or dangerous. Only a long, steady stomp through the hordes. They could only #continue until the end, but Rory grew weary. #vss365

The creature spoke only in #rhyme and expected Rory’s answers to follow suit. It wasn’t hard, but Rory wasn’t the type for poetry and such, it expected too much interpretation and he needed more orderly things. A final question arose and Rory sighed with relief for that. #vss365

Ah. This was a trope! Admittedly, a well-presented one. A #garden filled with weathered, eroded statues depicting adventurers of all kinds. Something Rory had seen in movies and read in books. Not statues, but petrified, dead people. He had a good idea what lay in wait. #vss365

A white, chrystaline dust coated the ground in the very pit of this dungeon, but it didn’t look like dust, nor sand. It looked like very fine #sugar . No wonder the boss monster ran around at great speed, screaming. It was in the throes of an epic sugar rush! #vss365

Rory had been accused of being intransigent before, unwilling to change for many reasons, but he thought he was quite #flexible . It wasn’t that he didn’t listen to ideas for the group, he did, it was just that most of the ideas were incredibly stupid. Especially Kevin’s. #vss365

This quest had led Rory to a part of a dungeon he had completed before, revealing a hidden nook where Pithea’s thievery skills unlocked the secret door. The sanctum #breached , Rory now had to find where the sorcerer hid his most powerful items. A sizeable reward waited. #vss365

Rory had got himself #entangled in a combined quest with other players and he didn’t like it. The rewards were huge, but he didn’t know these people. His group. He liked playing with his group because he knew them. Of course, he hadn’t liked them, at first, either. #vss365

It wasn’t a pleasant stroll, an uncomplicated #amble through the countryside. It had a purpose. A very boring purpose, up to now, but a purpose. Leading a lost child back to the arms of her parents. Rory may as well have tried to herd cats as the child ran to and fro. #vss365

Rory wasn’t doing anything, which wasn’t all that unusual. In the real world, yes. In the game he rarely sat around doing nothing, but he did now, caught by a moment of beauty. There was a word for it in Turkish, #yakamoz , the sight of moonlight on water. Beautiful. #vss365

Rory gazed up in awe at the creature that would purport to being a god. It wasn’t, only an unimaginably powerful being, but it looked as close to a god as Rory would ever see. In the game, that is. A pure, iridescent #radiance surrounded the being. An aura of peace. #vss365

No matter what Rory did, he couldn’t quite get to grips with the game that morning. Monsters he should have dispatched with ease gave him trouble. Puzzles flummoxed him. Mazes confused him. Something was terribly wrong. He’d lost his #mojo ! He didn’t know he had any. #vss365

As Rory waited for the group boss to respawn, he allowed Pithea a moment of whimsy. A memento that allowed her to play a lute, casting a haunting #melody around the area where other players’ characters danced and wheeled in merriment. This was nice. A virtual community. #vss365

This was not what most people enjoyed the game for, but Rory felt as excited by it as any other part. An #enlivening debate about the consequences of the use of magic unfettered, and it had started to get feisty. Old mages preparing to attack each other was always fun. #vss365

Rory made a #sterling effort in his leadership of the group as they navigated and experienced the complex new group dungeon. Near deaths were kept to a minimum. Tactics worked. Strategies came to fruition. He soaked in the praise. The next he would, no doubt, suck at. #vss365

The group had worked so well together in the group dungeon that Rory wanted to thank them all and tell them how #proud he was of them all once they returned to the group house. Except everybody had to leave the game and Rory had to keep his pride to himself, in silence. #vss365

Misty breaths on the cool, clear air, Dew dropped webs on privet hedges, The impossibly long walk, To a place I did not wish to be, When so much wonder abounded before me. #vss365

Rory wouldn’t consider himself among the most #successful players in the game. He had, pretty much, done every quest, collected most items and collectibles, but he didn’t force himself to, like the completist he was. In no other place did he ‘go with the flow’, but here. #vss365

Rory felt like a well-oiled machine. He and the console, the controller, his character, Pithea, all working as one. Almost symbiotic. He was in the #groove , playing, but not rushing, the game so well he feared he could run out of content. There was no chance of that. #vss365

The boss monster for the dungeon completed the entire #motif that had appeared from the very beginning. Moths. Ordinary moths floated and fluttered throughout. The priests of the cult were called Moth Acolytes. The final boss? A giant moth. Naturally. So very creepy. #vss365

The creature proved a pitiful sight, one that appeared more in pain and distress than a danger to Pithea, but Rory knew that it was very much a danger. A #fusion of several other monsters, stitched together magically by a mage so vile, Rory could only despise him. #vss365

Pithea stalked the man that Rory had taken the quest to follow and find out what his #twisted game was. This was right in the character’s wheelhouse and Rory moved her from cover to cover, stopping when the mark stopped, moving with stealth as he moved. This was easy! #vss365

The shady character had sidled up to Rory, in passing, with a conspiratorial ‘psst’ that didn’t make it seem, at all, like the man was involved in some kind of #hustle . It was a quest, though one with dubious morality, and Rory was, if nothing else, a completist. #vss365

What #bird , of melancholy song, Alights upon barren branches? A mournful call to morning, Best served by huddled shoulders, And deep hoods. A stoop toward day, As flight is taken, Leaving one alone and cold once more. #vss365

The group dungeon had a point where monsters spawned at ever higher rates and it threatened to be too much for Rory and his group-mates. Almost #overwhelmed , he gave Pithea a rejuvenating potion and sent her forth to lead the way onward. They could do this! Maybe. #vss365

Rory had believed the pirate captain had changed her ways, had turned to the side of the righteous, but he was deceived. She hadn’t changed at all and proved she was only ever #motivated by the fortune they had found together. Live and learn. Trust no-one. Such a pity. #vss365

The dark felt almost all-encompassing and none of Rory’s tricks worked. No mementoes provided enough light to push back against the oppressive darkness. And, out there in the black, something moved. A #slither and a hiss that appears to come from every direction. #vss365

It was the #animosity of privilege that Rory encountered. The brazen uncaring attitude, the lack of empathy while believing themselves absolutely right that often blighted the comfortable to well off. Rory hated it in real life. More so in the game. It had all types. #vss365
