KWS Director General Prof. @ErustusKanga witnessed the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding between Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy ( @MKWC_KE ) and Chester Zoo. This meaningful partnership marks a significant step forward in advancing conservation through technology, research, and capacity building, further strengthening the long-standing collaboration between KWS and MKWC. Prof. Kanga highlighted the alignment of this initiative with Kenya’s broader national conservation agenda. "The KWS Strategic Plan 2024-2028 underscores our dedication to fostering thriving wildlife populations through enhanced species recovery programs and improved wildlife health. Our partnership with MKWC and Chester Zoo represents a significant milestone in advancing conservation through technology, research, and capacity building. MKWC has been instrumental in the recovery strategy for the critically endangered Bongo, and with innovative tools like AI-driven habitat monitoring and cutting-edge rewilding research, we are optimistic about accelerating the reintroduction of this iconic species into the wild." Over the past 20 years, MKWC has demonstrated unwavering support for KWS, particularly in the recovery strategy for the critically endangered Bongo. With the application of AI technology, such as habitat monitoring tools from ConservationAI, and the latest research on breeding and rewilding, we are confident that Bongo numbers will increase, and their reintroduction into their natural habitat will gain momentum. KWS remains committed to working closely with MKWC on the expansion of the Mawingu Bongo Sanctuary, the Orphanage and Vet Care Centre, and restoration and education programs.
