House Republicans say they want a new Church Committee. I know about the real Church Committee, and what they are planning is the opposite of the Church Committee. What they really have planned is a repeat of McCarthyism.
Thomas Risen, my co-author on The Last Honest Man, with a copy of the book at a Barnes & Noble bookstore. He's also my son, and I'm very proud to have teamed up with him on The Last Honest Man.
Few people today remember how central Cambodia was to Nixon's approach to the Vietnam War, and how Nixon's 1970 invasion of Cambodia helped finally turn Americans against the war, and against Nixon.
The "leftists" who oppose U.S. aid for Ukraine are no different from the useful idiots of the 1930s who supported Stalin. Especially those who claim to be journalists. They are direct descendants of Walter Duranty.
From Dan Rather:
To my fellow journalists, I know this is difficult. We are in uncharted waters. The old rules for covering politics no longer apply. In the end, false equivalence is just another way of obscuring the truth from your readers and viewers.
The CIA did everything it could to block Feinstein from investigating its illegal use of torture. It spied on Feinstein's intelligence committee staff and destroyed evidence. So this statement from the CIA about Feinstein's legacy is very hypocritical.
Anyone around after 9/11 would find today's Republican attacks on an all-powerful Deep State hilarious. At the time, Republicans said the CIA and the intelligence community had been neutered by the Church Committee two decades earlier, and needed to be unleashed.
The online link for pre-orders of my new book, "The Last Honest Man," is now live. It tells the remarkable story of Senator Frank Church and the Church Committee. It will be published May 9, 2023 by Little, Brown.
The 1975 assassination of Richard Welch, the CIA's Athens station chief, was falsely used by the CIA to try to discredit Senator Frank Church and the Church Committee, the first congressional investigation of the CIA ever conducted.
Orlando Letelier Was Secretly a Witness to the Church Committee Before He Was Assassinated. He's one of three Church Committee witnesses to have been murdered.
Frank Church hated Kissinger's militarism, and tried to stop U.S. combat operations in Cambodia. One of several Cooper-Church Amendments in the Senate was designed to defund U.S. military operations in Cambodia.
The Deep State remains a myth, a right-wing conspiracy theory, precisely because the Church Committee brought the intelligence community fully under the rule of law and into the American system of government.
The new reporting by the Intercept shows that Nixon and Kissinger were obsessed with Cambodia and its role as a supply line for the North Vietnamese. Secret U.S. bombing raids went on even when there were no U.S. ground troops there.
Unique job opportunity! The National Security Agency is currently accepting applications for a historian position in the Center for Cryptologic History.
The Deep State is a conspiracy theory that takes the truth about the military-intelligence-homeland security complex, and turns it on its head. It is a right wing fantasy to believe that the Pentagon, CIA, the FBI, Northrup Grumman, Booz Allen and SAIC are out to get Trump.
The image of Trump lunging for the steering wheel to drive himself to the U.S. Capitol to lead the insurrection will be the image that history remembers of him.
The Last Honest Man is on The New York Times bestseller list!
I think it is because today, people are hungry for a story about a good man doing great things.
The military-intelligence-homeland security industrial complex is capitalistic, pro-military and deeply conservative, and it is a conspiracy theory to believe they are pushing an anti-Trump woke agenda.
I still can't believe that someone at the Wall Street Journal typed the words "Chinese craft raises fears of a ‘balloon gap’ in intelligence gathering."
The Last Honest Man will for the first time tell the true story of the 1975 assassination of the CIA's Athens Station Chief, Richard Welch, and how the CIA covered up the truth in order to smear the Church Committee.
My new book, The Last Honest Man, will be published May 9. It tells the incredible story of the Church Committee and its unprecedented investigation of the CIA and the intelligence community. Three of its witnesses were murdered.
It took me a long time to decide to write about this weird experience. For a long time, I was trying to figure out what happened. I'm still not sure I understand everything about it.
But Frank Church saw "Vietnamization" for what it was -- a cynical strategy to continue to wage the Vietnam War without as much domestic opposition. Indeed, 20,000 Americans died in the Vietnam War during the period of "Vietnamization."
Nixon and Kissinger wanted to disrupt and destroy North Vietnamese supply and logistical hubs in Cambodia, but the invasion was a huge political miscalculation. Suddenly, the Vietnam War was back in the headlines for the first time in months.
There is an inability on the right to see the difference between the military-intelligence-homeland security industrial complex, which is real, and the Deep State, which is not. I tried to explain it here:
Congress should investigate the vast power of the real military-intelligence-homeland security industrial complex, not pursue conspiracy theories that defense contractors making billions off arms deals are somehow part of a woke anti-Trump cabal.
Republicans are absurdly comparing their "weaponizing of government" scam to the Church Committee of the 1970s.
I talked to a top Church aide. He blasted the comparison as "absurd" and "sad," slamming the GOP effort as a "protection operation" for Trump:
When Milt Bearden and I were working on The Main Enemy, Rem gave us a personal tour of the sites in Moscow where CIA officers had been arrested by the KGB during the Cold War. He wrote his memoir after the publication of The Main Enemy, in which he was a key figure.

I just blocked Elon Musk on Twitter. It's like blocking Big Brother in 1984, George Orwell's classic novel about an all-powerful police state.
I will see if it works.
My first job as a reporter was in Fort Wayne. My wife and I got married in Fort Wayne. The Catholic Archdiocese refused our request for a joint Catholic-Lutheran service. A priest from an inner-city parish who was also a Fort Wayne cop finally agreed.

Yes, I remember in the 1960s when I was very young going with my father to meet a sales agent for a new housing development in Virginia. The man told my father that they didn't sell any houses to Jews or Blacks. My father, who grew up a Southern Baptist, got up and walked out.
Do you remember when you were growing up, do you remember how simple life was, how easy it felt? It was about faith, family, and country. We can have that again, but to do that, we must vote Joe Biden out.

It isn't surprising that it has taken so long for the full truth to come out about Kissinger's bloody record, especially if you look at the special treatment he constantly received from the Washington press. Just look at Watergate.
I covered economics early in my career. Today, there are only two stories that get reported, and those are endlessly repeated: 1) How the Fed will react to the latest inflation report. 2) How polls show that people feel bad about the economy. It's a sign of journalistic laziness.
Underlying inflation has returned to the Fed’s target of around 2%, and unemployment appears to have stabilized near its fifty-year low, and the obvious narrative is that everything’s terrible.
Elon Musk has become a creepy omnipresence on Twitter, making Twitter feel like it is his personal propaganda platform, and everybody else is in the way. The whole site now seems to be bent to amplify his weird right-wing interests, and de-emphasize everything else.

The Last Honest Man is a New York Times bestseller! I think it is because the story has it all: Three of the Church Committee's witnesses were murdered. One was found dead floating in a barrel in Biscayne Bay off Miami.
The fact that Orlando Letelier was secretly a witness to the Church Committee before he was assassinated is disclosed for the first time in my new book, The Last Honest Man.
This is the most hilarious document I've ever gotten from the government during my reporting career. When I was subpoenaed by the Justice Department in a leak case in 2008, my lawyers filed a FOIA to ask for all documents the government had on me. They didn't respond until 2019.
The New York Times and Washington Post both specialized in adoring, servile coverage of Kissinger. As national security advisor and secretary of state in both the Nixon and Ford Administrations, he was a prime anonymous source for reporters at both papers. The press ate it up.
What the military-intelligence-homeland security industrial complex wants is more money; more defense spending, more arms deals, more covert intelligence contracts -- and less oversight. It only cares about politics if it gets in the way of their ability to make money.
Prigozhin released today a new interview going over the current state of affairs as well as looking back at the events preceding the start of the "SMO". In this first bit, he explains that the Donbas was plundered by Russians since 2014 and the 2022 war began for reasons very
Right-wing extremists in the GOP pretend they are anti-war. They are not. They want war with China.
They don't want the U.S. to support Ukraine because they are pro-Putin. They are pro-Putin because they weirdly think he is a Christian nationalist.
There is a weird alliance between Christian Nationalists and fringe writers who claim to be leftists, when they are actually just pro-Putin, pro-autocracy.
Former Church Committee staffer Peter Fenn on MSNBC tonight, discussing how Jim Jordan's "weaponization" committee is nothing like the real Church Committee.
I'm happy to say that THE LAST HONEST MAN, my new book on Frank Church and the Church Committee, has just been selected as one of Publisher’s Weekly Top Ten History titles in their Spring 2023 preview.
The 40-year right-wing campaign against Roe vs. Wade included clinic bombings and murder. Dr. David Gunn. Dr. John Britton. Dr. George Tiller. Dr. Barnett Slepian. They were all murdered because they provided safe and legal abortions.
Trump may face two more criminal indictments this year, bringing the total to four. He was also impeached twice. Will four indictments and two impeachments be enough to convince Republicans to abandon their cult leader?
Reader comment on The Last Honest Man (continued)
No matter your political opinion, I think this book is an incredibly written account of American History.
History eventually caught up with Kissinger's lies. In 1982, Sy Hersh wrote about Kissinger's long effort to conceal his program of wiretapping aides and reporters. Hersh had previously broken open the CIA domestic spying scandal that led to the creation of the Church Committee.
"People need to very thoughtfully and carefully weigh the costs and benefits of using Twitter, given their personal security situation," Yoel Roth, who resigned from his position as Twitter's Head of Trust & Safety, told All Things Considered host Ari Shapiro.
In Idaho today, the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness is known simply as "the Frank."
Frank Church had a profound impact on America in many different ways, and yet few Americans remember him. That's why I wrote a book about him.
