The Sixty Martyrs of Gaza: The Christians Who Refused to Convert to Islam In December 638, Amr bin al-As captured 60 Christian soldiers who had been fighting against the Muslim army that had besieged Gaza. The Muslims had slaughtered many people in their attempt to conquer Gaza but the 60 Christians fought back bravely and killed many Muslims in response. Amr bin al-As was so impressed with their bravery and skill that when he captured them he told them to convert to Islam and join his jihad. Amr specifically wanted them to "recede from the confession of Christ". When they refused, Amr separated the martyrs from their wives and children and sent them to various prisons over the course of many months: first to Eleutheropolis, then to Theropolis, and lastly to Jerusalem where he left Abu Ubaida in charge of them. Each time they would refuse to abandon Christ, Amr would send them to even worse dungeons. After 10 months of being in Jerusalem, Amr wrote to Abu Ubaida instructing him to: "tell them to deny their faith; and if they agreed to deny Christ, take off their shackles and release them with great honor; but if they did not want to consent, decapitate the first of them along with nine others in front of the others, so that the others seeing this, led by fear, might deny their faith." Sophronius (Partriarch of Jerusalem) and Callinicus of Heliopolis visited the martyrs in the dungeons and encouraged them not to abandon Christ. As expected, the Christians refused to comply with the orders of Amr and they all together confessed their faith in Christ once again. This made Amr angry. Nine of the Christians and their leader were taken out of the city gates and decapitated. The rest were sent back to the dungeons. A month later, Amr sent for the remaining 50 Christians while wondering why they refused to "say the shahada" (i.e., convert to Islam). He brought their wives and children before them and said: "How long will you remain with stiff necks, refusing to consent to our ceremonies? If you consent to us, behold, you will have your wives and children, and you will be like us, and you will have honor just like one of us. If not, you will suffer what your fellow soldiers suffered." The martyrs responded in unison: "No one is capable of separating us from the love of Christ, not wives, not children, not all of the things of this world; we are servants of the living God and we are prepared to die for him who died and was resurrected for us." On hearing this, Amr was furious and had them all surrounded and then killed because of their faith in Christ.
