Netherlands lost a great warrior-scholar this past week. Ivor Wiltenburg (Dutch Army Lt Col) and I had become best friends over the last 5 years. He was a tremendous advocate for doing NATO military assistance better. He is greatly missed by me and his family & friends 😭
Vandaag indrukwekkend obituary in de T van (door

@landmacht
. Rust zacht Ivor. Het was goed zoveel vrienden, collegae en familie van je bijeen te zien en te horen vertellen over hun beelden en band met jou.

Unlawful order. It’s a UCMJ 92 violation to stand behind a non-elected official in uniform that is politicking for partisan purposes.
Before Macron’s comments, Dr. Alex Crowther and I were drafting an article about sending an EU-flagged military mission to protect Ukraine. We argue Europe must exercise its strategic autonomy as the US becomes unreliable and NATO avoids escalation.
We (LTC Rosenberg & Prof Reno) argue that volunteers & NGOs are having a much bigger impact on the Ukrainian military than Western capitals realize. We must ensure these private actors keep filling the gaps where Western security assistance falls short.
FIRST USE OF 🇷🇺T-14 IN UKRAINE
Depraved Western liberal lesbians like
@noclador
have doubted the supremacy of 🇷🇺T-14
NOT ANYMORE!
See this exicting battle footage from first use of T-14 in Ukraine, and be amazed!!
🇷🇺VICTORY🇷🇺
A retired U.S. F-15 pilot: "I think the [Ukrainian air force] pilots would know what they need better than our Pentagon analysts sitting at desks who have never stepped foot in Ukraine, nor seen inside the cockpit of a Fulcrum.”
Makes me think: What if Turkey buying advanced Russian air defense systems a few years ago was just a ploy for helping them make Armed drones capable of defeating said Russian air defenses? 😂😂😂
Turkey spends about a third of what we do on defence yet manages to sustain a viable and innovative defence industry that has scored some significant export successes with genuinely capable systems
@BobSkylstad
It’s literally forbidden by UCMJ 92 and every year we get annual training about prohibited political activities, especially about being in uniform during a political event.
My article w/ Prof Will Reno (
@IndigenousWill
) describes how the US/NATO could improve the quality of training programs for the Ukrainians. It’s based on dozens of interviews with US/NATO advisors and Ukrainian troops and we argue to “Ukrainify” training
@ElbridgeColby
@Official_NAFO
is definitely helping Ukraine with lethal and non-lethal aid, while also repulsing Russian propaganda.
My research shows how NAFO (and other civil society actors) are helping Ukraine and fighting authoritarianism:
@michaeldweiss
The more important point about this article is that a lot of the European militaries were better about giving the Ukrainians their best kit on artillery, main battle tanks, etc., whereas the US was risk-averse to giving Ukrainians any modern American military kit.
@TheKimulation
What if we made an Iron Eagle 5 movie, and this time, it’s about a Vietnam Vet Grandpa stealing the Houthis F-5 before the Americans destroy the airbase?!
Just sent out an update on the chance of European intervention for Ukraine, motivated by the deliberate statements of
@EmmanuelMacron
People who discount European intervention for Ukraine do not understand war. The longer they go on, the bloodier they become...
What if I said that the USG background check process is deeply broken/antiquated? A real background check wouldn’t be you telling the investigator “Hey, here’s 5 friends I trust that can vouch for me as being a non-threat to US national security”
@bloo40
And a uniformed service member needs to leave the stage when an unelected person goes on stage (and on camera) and begins politicking and campaigning.
An EU-flagged mission to Ukraine, led by French and Dutch forces could easily integrate Canadian troops into EU command. Ireland should join too, just to throw a non-NATO curveball at Putin!
🇨🇦🇺🇦 Canadian Minister of National Defence Bill Blair says that they are open to deploying Canadian Forces personnel to Ukraine to conduct training operations.
I had a great time collaborating with
@alexcrowther1
&
@PhillipsPOBrien
- we discuss why it’s imperative for the Europeans to militarily intervene in Ukraine:
@HoansSolo
2/2 Hence, when I interviewed 40+ Ukr troops and volunteer fighters back in August, it was quite obvious they knew war was coming. They admitted that many senior Ukr Mil/Gov officials were drunks, but most under 40 were super motivated/excited to fight the Russians.
@GravitysRa1nbow
Exactly. Can’t just expect our Abrams tanks to be golden paperweights sitting 100km away from the front. Get more into the fight!!! There’s 200ish reserve USMC Abrams collecting dust right now that could be easily sent over.
If you have old uniforms collecting dust in your garage, please consider donating them to
@FltGearUkraine
— they help Ukrainians Air Force and Air Defense forces get the gear they need to defend their country. Here’s a box of flight suits, coats, and gloves etc for Ukraine 🫡
“Trent the Tire” guy doesn’t know that Ukrainians will have to sweep their roads for every F-16 takeoff/landing to prevent damage to the low-hanging engine intake due to susceptibility to FOD (foreign object debris) ingestion. Dispersed F-16 road operations are more difficult!
@GearDisrespect
@ElbridgeColby
When someone forgets WW2 - the U.S. literally fought island hopping campaigns in the Pacific, North African battles, and major air-land-sea operations in Europe…
@ElbridgeColby
Seriously though, Colby why can’t you accept that the U.S. can fight a 2+ Front War? (Under the reality that the U.S. would mobilize all of society to defeat China, Russia, etc)
With all the blame being thrown at the US military for coups in Africa, I wrote this to counter bad narratives about US security assistance. This article even includes an interview with a Senior Nigerian officer about perceptions of US training.
Just back from Poland having met the great military personnel running the
@MNBHQ
(Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade) - please consider donating to help wounded Ukrainian troops and their families
@komondors
Nope. National Guard, which falls under UCMJ; hence his tag says US Air Force (he’s not State Guard which has different rules and the tag would actually say Texas instead of US Air Force):
.
@Havoc_Six
@shannon3095
Yup, it was a lodging reason. We usually got our own rooms on C-17 missions overseas, but with weird bases, we typically would be assigned a Crew Tent or Crew building with shared beds, bathrooms, etc. The G-code made sure female crew members got separate/private facilities.
In this newspaper article with
@TelegrafComUa
, I discuss the implications of F-16s, training & education, and drones for Ukraine's military. I also mention how "NATO unicorns" are needed in Ukraine's military to fix internal problems.
@dburbach
@joshtpm
@PeterDombrowsk6
It’s 110% improper. If President Biden was there instead, it would then be legal. But I’m pretty sure my two decades of annual training about allowed political activities says that you cannot be present in uniform for a campaign speech by a non-elected official.
@michaeldweiss
Yup, you’re on point here Mike, as are your Ukrainian MoD officials wanting these two seater fighter jets (1 pilot, and 1 “WSO” [weapon systems officer])…the F-15 and F-18, with the right avionics/electronics suite could operate more capably against RUS Airpower & Air Defenses
This needs to happen. There’s nothing escalatory about NATO countries shooting down Russian missiles in Ukrainian airspace that are usually hitting civilian centers and infrastructure.
@HoansSolo
1/2 Takes me back to all the research I’ve done with a focus on interviewing foreign militaries. You learn a lot just by having beers with a few officers and enlisted, and peel back the layers of what is going good and bad in a military.
@MichaelShurkin
But if a country with mines wanted to stockpile a bunch of goldbars, they could right? Just don’t sell your gold to a foreign power and then you can have a warehouse full of gold collecting dust
@BA_Friedman
@Mauro_Gilli
And also think that Putin’s forces might be on the opposite side of history as winter comes and the Stalingrad experience will be the freezing of RUS troops across Ukraine while Ukrainian forces have all the cold weather gear they need to outmaneuver and outfight RUS troops
@RealCynicalFox
Actually we can, it’s because our foreign aid budget is such a small percentage. Anyways, money and the US deficit is a social construct - it only matters when you want it to matter.
@Rythovia
Exactly. There was no article 5 invoked when NATO members had forces die in Iraq. Similarly, US/Canada/French have lost troops on missions across Africa the last decade and that doesn’t mean Article 5 either.
@PhillipsPOBrien
First Mearsheimer, and now Walt. I’m getting a feeling that an old generation of Cold War IR Theory Scholars do not get it anymore. These Theorists have not adjusted their paradigms to the current geopolitical context in the Information Age.
My latest take on Ukraine with Prof Will Reno (
@PoliSciatNU
) on how the Pentagon needs to learn how this war is different & the value of global civil society responding to Russian aggression, to include the role that
#NAFO
is playing to counter propaganda and equip Ukrainians
The Ukraine conflict shows that the U.S. needs to adapt to the realities of war in the 21st century. The best place to begin is developing unconventional military partners, write
@JaharaMatisek
and Will Reno
@goddersbloom
You’re clearly not an “expert” because first off you called yourself one, and secondly because Finnish history is full of problems associated with Russians invading their lands
Ukraine, as
@Felix_Nuno
, correctly puts it, needs a massive infusion of air defenses and more ammo. Without Congress doing its job, Ukraine is going to experience more destruction of its civilian infrastructure, which will exponentially cost us all more in the end.
@sarahleah1
2/2 - Otherwise, if you want the Ukrainians to win the “American way” then you should be advocating for the Ukrainians to get F-22s, F-35s, and B-2s to use precision munitions to clear Russian trenches and fortifications all across the occupied territories of Ukraine.
@NicoleGrajewski
@Emma_Pike_
She did the graphics and design for one report on nuclear famine. This is why people are asking about credentials and why The NY Times decided to elevate her when there’s really smart nuke people out there like Dr. Caitlin Talmadge
@nozomimeanshope
This is wrong too. It isn’t like Washington said “Hey Hollywood, we need you to make a WW2 atomic bomb movie and have it come out at the same time as the Barbie movie, because, you know, we need to cinematically camouflage US bases in Japan, Guam, etc.”
@sentdefender
@Zimbru
Moreover, it would be legal if the General was TX State Guard (the tag/plate above his heart would say “Texas” instead of “US Air Force”). Since it says US Air Force, he still falls under the authority of the US National Guard Bureau:
