Dear JSU family and friends: Our campus and our community were hit this evening by severe storms. It has only just become safe for university police to come out of shelter and they are out assessing the damage and going dorm to dorm checking on residents.

The Jacksonville State University Board of Trustees today confirmed Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. – a two-time JSU graduate and acting president since Oct. 22, 2019 – as the university’s 13th president. His new role is effective immediately. Congrats President Killingsworth!

JSU was hit by an EF-3 tornado last night. At this time the city of Jacksonville has issued a curfew that will begin at 7 p.m. The entire JSU campus off-limits and we are asking that all people stay off the roads at this time.

To let our graduates know how proud we are of them, we have arranged for a special treat. For the first time since an EF-3 tornado struck campus on March 19, 2018, the roof of the 13-story Houston Cole Library will be lit Gamecock Red in honor of the graduating class.

We are happy to report that Dr. Bill Meehan, JSU President Emeritus, is going home after two weeks in the hospital battling COVID-19. He still has a long way to go before he is completely healed, but we are grateful he has reached this important milestone in the recovery process.

Our hearts are heavy today after receiving word from engineers that our beloved Alumni House cannot be salvaged. The tornado not only caused significant damage to the house but exposed unrepairable foundation issues lying below.

HUGE shoutout to @JSUNews for helping us get my paw paw his DIPLOMA on his 87th birthday!he lacked one credit and has said for years how much he regrets not finishing it. He was recently diagnosed with dementia and this has done so much for our spirits. So proud of my graduate!♥️

Students in Jacksonville State University's marching band, the Marching Southerners, toured the Roman Colosseum today. The band is in Rome to perform in the annual World Peace Day Parade at the Vatican on New Year's Day.
