Amazing. Never thought I'd write this:
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Over more than two decades, South Carolina voters forgave U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford for his quirkiness, his infidelity and his lies. But they could not forgive him for his criticism of President Donald Trump.
The conservative, Republican SC House was silent for 8:46 of what Speaker Jay Lucas called “thoughtful prayer” Wednesday to honor George Floyd. I’ve never seen anything like it. Here’s my story and video.
Got hairy. A couple of quick notes. The 63 appears to be the most Tennessee has allowed in a SEC game, eclipsing the 62 by Spurrier’s Florida in 1995. The 63 was most in SEC for South Carolina since beating Miss St 65-39 in 1995 with Steve Taneyhill at QB.
Kentucky's win totals the last 3 non-COVID seasons: 10, 8, 10. And that 8-win season? That was when Lynn Bowden Jr. led the team in rushing and receiving and was just 288 yards away from leading them in passing. Mark Stoops is a wizard.
If South Carolina beats Iowa, the Gamecocks this season will have beaten:
_ All other Final Four teams (Iowa, UConn, NC State)
_ 5 of 7 other Elite 8 (+ LSU, Oregon St)
_ 8 of 15 other Sweet 16 (+ Indiana, Duke, Notre Dame)
Here you go -- a federal judge rather forcefully overturns SC's ban on school districts from requiring masks, saying it wasn't a close call and comparing it to the state banning wheelchair ramps. My story:
South Carolina’s largest school district says the governor was out of line today with his. News conference. Part of the statement from Greenville county schools is here:
I sometimes think about how many people would say John Lewis was on the good side of this photo now. And how many fewer thought that when it was taken in 1965.
A bit of personal news. My story on the agonizing decisions schools boards across the US have to make anchored from Rock Hill won the AP's weekly best story in the nation contest. So I've now won both the AP's weekly best reporting prizes.
I've been covering trials in SC for 25 years now and during the quiet time last night, I thought about Alex Murdaugh's trial. It is certainly moving toward the longest and is also one of the oddest trials I've ever seen. And not in just the circus aspect.
I don't do a lot of Take That Autism moments these days because Abby is Abby and it's a part of her just like her sparkly blue eyes. But today as she started work at Target. She’s loving it. She even checked people out. That would have been fun to see. So Take That Autism!
A federal judge has upheld ex-police officer Michael Slager's 20-year prison sentence in the on duty killing of Walter Scott, a Black man running from a traffic stop in North Charleston in 2015. More to come...
Today is 3 years since 9 kind, caring people were gunned down at Emanuel AME in Charleston. I think about them often. Tywanza Sanders faced evil that day and asked why. That's courage. God bless them. And don't forget Cynthia Hurd's motto: "Be kinder than necessary"

Littlest update!! (Short one)
We made Lego flowers today. The tube draining the fluid off her lungs came out. She walked with a walker. She's about to eat Panda Express. All signs pointing ⬆️. Might be under 2 weeks to go 🎇
@MandeyCollins
My older sister Suzanne died yesterday. I’m glad she is at peace. I’ll take any good vibes, thoughts and prayers, but especially for my parents who have lost two daughters in 3 years.
An interesting look at Nikki Haley's mindset after the Charleston church shooting. It's also worth watching her answer on the Confederate flag from the 2014 governor debate (about 9 months before the shooting):
SC political twitter has been a nice reminder of why this is such a caring, unique state in the wake of Katie Arrington's wreck. No matter who you follow from any party or end of the spectrum has stopped and cared. This is a good place. Here's our story:
In case you missed it yesterday, Littlest walked (!!) out of the hospital after 66 days in her new Lightning McQueen Crocs. I'm working from home right now for the first time in 2 months. So many happy tears. Thanks for all the love, prayers and good vibes. Y'all are the best!
For the first time, 2 survivors of the racist massacre that killed 9 Black worshippers at Emanuel AME church in Charleston in 2015 appeared in person to ask senators to pass a hate crimes law. SC and Wyoming are the only states without one
I wrote this story today about Orangeburg paying $650,000 to a man who had his head stomped by an officer after the pins and rods in his leg wouldn't let him get on the ground fast enough:
South Carolina cases never really, really slowed down. Officials just decided it was time to move on and emphasize personal responsibility (masks, distancing) in fighting COVID-19.
South Carolina announces 512 new cases of COVID-19 today, another record high, and seven more deaths.
The state has seen 13,916 confirmed cases and 545 deaths from the pandemic.
It has tested more than 242,000 people.
Yesterday's positivity rate was 9.2 percent.
An example in the Alex Murdaugh trial of how testimony is tailored toward the audience. Law firm CFO Jeanne Seckinger's jury testimony is almost identical to what she told judge, except when asked Alex's strength as a lawyer:
“He did it through the art of bullshit, basically.”
South Carolina Sen. Larry Grooms is putting up an amendment that would require the Carolina Panthers to play two regular season games in SC to get the tax breaks. The debate is getting interesting, even with what I suspect is a non-starter.
LITTLEST UPDATE!!
First day of school!!
I always planned this to be the final update of Laura's health saga. She's back at school today in person for the first time for her senior year. Hallelujah!! (1 / ??)
@MandeyCollins
This is Jack Jones. You probably don't know him, but he has been an integral part of the Associated Press in South Carolina for the past 25 years. Today is his last day. He is retiring. (1)
@JackAnthonyJone
ADDRESS CHANGE. Good news. Littlest is out of the ICU!! We are back on the 4th floor with our friends. Room 7405 now, so everything is mirror imaged. And the bleeding has stopped in the ulcer. So good news all around. Just waiting for
@MandeyCollins
to spruce it back up.
Dear members of South Carolina boards,
You are a citizen with First Amendment rights. You can talk about anything you want. The only thing about executive session is the public can’t listen directly. Secrets and darkness are anathema to our system of government.

This is a quite different Lindsey Graham than his other 3 US Senate runs. Much less optimistic. A good chunk of bio (other than 2002). A bit more wound up. It is going to be an interesting 31 days.
I think folks in South Carolina are allowed to say they never would have thought 25 years ago. Congrats to the governor and the vital humanitarian program he runs.
We are deeply humbled to receive the
#NobelPeacePrize
. This is an incredible recognition of the dedication of the
@WFP
family, working to end hunger everyday in 80+ countries.
Thank you
@NobelPrize
for this incredible honor!
24 years ago today I walked into the South Carolina AP bureau on Marion St. and started an adventure that turned into a career. It’s the best job around and been a heck of a ride. Dum spiro spero. Let’s keep it going!
Littlest update!!
We see the light at the end of the tunnel! Laura is eating pretty regular. She will probably get her last round of IV food tonight. She is walking without a walker. So all is looking good to leaving soon here at Day 63.
@MandeyCollins

Today is awesome. I'm heading this afternoon to Abby's final IEP meeting after more than 15 years. Mandey is bringing cake. I'm going to cry alot. Thanks to the countless wonderful people who poured their heart and talent into that young lady. I thought about wearing this … (1)
Littlest praise report! The BiPap mask is off and we have one well-breathing, calm, peaceful and still quite a bit confused sweetheart. I think I'm happier to see her face than I was on that birthdate I've repeated 1,000 times the past 7 weeks! 🏆
@MandeyCollins
Littlest update!!
Sometimes pictures can tell almost all the story. For the first time in 60 days, Laura is wearing regular clothes and went outside!
Lots of good news in this one.
@MandeyCollins

Today is hurry up and wait for an operating room to open so we can get a drain put in and finally relieve the pressure a pancreatic cyst is putting on everything else. Hopefully that’s the key that opens the door to a slow recovery. Thanks again for all the thoughts & prayers
Mandey lost her father today. Please keep her and all of us in your thoughts. All her grandparents and her mom and dad are gone. As she told me, now I have no one to call 💔
@MandeyCollins
Dad has transitioned from this earthly place. Blessed to have had an example of what it means to be the patriarch of a family for 90 years. In his early years, he picked cotton on the Gressette farm. In his later years, he witnessed me sworn-in the Gressette Senate Building.❤️
Littlest update!!! Things are still looking ⬆️ here on Day 50. All her blood work is good, she can get to the bathroom with a walker, she finally got that shower she had been waiting weeks to get and she is eating a little. (1 / ??)
@MandeyCollins
Littlest update!!
I-C-U later! After spending 16 of the past 17 days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Laura has been released to a regular floor (oddly enough, to the same room we got on July 7 our 1st hospital go around. (1/ ??)
@MandeyCollins
I started working at The Associated Press 19 years ago today. It's been an amazing adventure. I'm still in awe some days that it is a job. Here's how Year 20 starts (governor's news conference on the Panthers not included)
A reminder that in South Carolina, all attorney general opinions are just basically educated guesses on how a court would rule. They hold no weight until somebody sues and everyone goes to court and a judge makes a decision. What happened this week is no different.
This amazing child of mine is graduating! When this school year started on Aug. 17, she was in ICU. Might have been the toughest day. Every bead is a procedure from those 72 days. There will be tears. More to come, but for now, I'm so proud and so blown away!
@MandeyCollins
If you are so inclined, please send your prayers, good thoughts and vibes Meg’s way. Yes, she is a badass reporter. She is also a fantastic person who brings love and positivity to lots of us too.
A quick update: It's not working as well as we hoped it would. This cancer is rare and aggressive. But so am I.
I have 6 weeks to turn this around, and my doctors believe that I can do it. And so do I.
Thank you for your continued prayers and encouragement. I love you all. 👠♥️
23 years ago today, I walked into the AP bureau on Marion Street in Columbia. It's a great ride. No better job in the world, if you have the constitution for it. Onward and upward to year 24.
The breathing tube is out. Laura is awake and talking to us. She says she feels a little crazy and was surprised to find out she missed a good chunk of Monday and Wednesday and all day Tuesday. Mandey is reading all the social media posts and comments to her now. 🤩🥳
See that IV pole over there? It’s turned off. That’s a good thing. That’s progress. Laura is now getting almost all her nutrition through the feeding tube, meaning for the first time in about a month, her digestive system is doing what it is supposed to. (1/ )
@MandeyCollins
This woman's work blew up over the weekend, and rightfully so. The culture around the Alex Murdaugh trial is very interesting. And as always, Twitter is both the best and the worst of it. Check out her profile and her Judge Newman doll too. Humans are interesting creatures.
When there’s no trial to watch, apparently I have too much time on my hands. Yesterday, I made my own Big Creighton Energy. Any thoughts on who I should make next?

I let out a "$@*&"usually reserved for major breaking news. You had to have your A-game ready when covering the same thing as Avery. He is one of the best in SC and has been since the day he rolled into The State. Plus, he used to read me in Rock Hill. All the best, sir!
🚨🚨🚨 Personal news Megathread 🚨🚨🚨
This is my last week at

. It is also my last in the news business.
I've so enjoyed my 7.5 years as a news reporter, and I'm so proud of what we were able to accomplish during my time with the

Officially a

graduate! Wish I could have attended in person, but Zooming in from the beach wasn't so bad.
Thanks to
@HussmanGrad
for making this a reality for a working mom of 3. I now have an M.A. in digital communication.
Cheers to my fellow Tar Heels! We made it! 🍾
The shot hurt a little, but the huge feeling of relief was the surprise. I thought about the people I interviewed last March in Kershaw County when this all started and all the places I’ve been nervous since then. I’m a very thankful guy right now.
