Our farm house is home to 15 swallow families at the moment. They wake me up at dawn with their chattering and spend their day skimming over our cows eating the flies, returning to their nests to feed their chicks. An incredible sight 🌾
Councillors in Devon will debate a motion proposed by the Greens to ban meat & dairy. The motion is virtue signalling and the council should instead focus on supporting local farmers who are the backbone of the local economy, environment, and rural communities. Share if you agree
Tommy is a quiet bull. Today I was rolling hay out in the field & next thing I know I’m on my back in the mud. Tommy had got his head under my backside & thrown me in the air when trying to toss hay. I’m sore but unharmed. 11 farmers were killed by cattle in 2020. Stay safe
Had the worst phone call of my life today. Thankfully we, cattle and machinery are ok. Huge thank you to my neighbour who cleared the barn of calves before I got there and to
@52Steyning
&
@WorthingFire
without whom we would have lost both barns.
Whilst the bubble melts down, life in the real world carries on.
@Is0belwright
and I welcomed George Wright to the family this morning. Thank you to the fantastic
#NHS
midwives, nurses and doctors who made it possible. A big chap like me, 9lbs 7ozs 🚜👨🌾
When
@Is0belwright
told me I was going to be a Dad I had to go out with Sid for a chat. Do you ever feel old enough to be a parent and why is it arriving in the middle of calving?
Adverts like this should concern us all. Taking prime SW farm land out of food production for woodland is a nonsense.
🌾Erodes food security
💰Warps the land market away from farming buyers
👨👩👧 Threatens our rural communities by depleting housing stock and job opportunities
Isobel and I have doubled the size of our farm with a 5 1/2 year FBT, 15 minutes from our yard. Gives us security, the opportunity to apply for CSS and garner some free entitlements from the national reserve. Subject to contract but exciting none the less 🚜
Welcome to the family Arthur Andrew Barford Wright! Born on the night of the 23rd weighing 8lbs 7ozs. The dogs think you smell good and we think you’re wonderful
We're so excited that our new students have arrived on Campus for their induction week!
Our STARS are here to help these students settle in and make sure that they have a brilliant week.

Dreadful virtue signalling, especially shocking given the council has overspent by £2.1 million this year. No doubt they will be raising council tax next year as well. Nothing wrong with a balanced diet that prioritises seasonal vegetables and fantastic British dairy and meat!
Exeter City Council is taking a stand for the planet by transitioning to plant-based catering at all internal meetings & events. Join us in supporting

It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come from when we moved here at the end of 2018 to what was an abandoned farm. Now we’re farming with our 4 month old, across 143 acres & have an arctic lorry of weaned calves arriving tonight. Feel like we’re starting to hit our stride
Our starter holding FBT ends in September and we’ve yet to find somewhere move to. Plug: Farming family after 150+ acres of pasture or ideally mixed, south or south west. Well capitalised with off farm income (photos of our cows 2022, family 2019/22 & ewes 2018)
Absolute scenes up on the downs today. Terrified cattle with young calves, thousands of trespassers and hundreds of police. Hope those who attended are happy with themselves, a lot of mess and heart ache left in their wake
Im at a rewilding lecture this evening. Is the legacy of this movement going to be food shortages in 20-30 yrs? The fuel supply disruption should be setting alarm bells. To much talk of wholesale change & not enough about working in partnership to enhance what is already there
Quite the difference between 3rd of May 2020 and 2021 in the South East. Hopefully this week of weather will get the grass to catch up
@bbcweather
@metoffice
Chap who comes and helps me on Saturdays is looking for full-time role in Beef & Sheep. Ex-Royal Artillery, high level of trustworthiness and work ethic, safe in machinery & with stock. Late 30s with young family would need accommodation but 100% worth it. Don't all DM me at once
Delighted to have been nominated as
@BathCA
’s prospective parliamentary candidate. I will work hard on the issues that matter to residents across Bath

I’m very sorry to say that my Dad, Andrew Wright, died suddenly on the 7th of July 2023. He was only 64 years old and the family and I will miss him immensely.
Andrew had an incredible career spanning 43 years. Having achieved a Master’s degree in Geology from St Peter’s
Standing up for my home-city of Bath, where my mother and brother worked for the NHS, and where I got married and started my family. The Liberal Democrats have failed Bath with rising council tax, declining services, and mismanaged funds. We offer a Clear Plan and Bold Action.
I bought two pigs with my student loan, becoming the first farmer in my family for a hundred years. Watching
@JeremyClarkson
Farm is bringing back all the memories, bad fencing, horrible weather and piglet problems 🐷🐖
Oxford City council joins three Labour lead councils to ban British-grown meat and dairy.
@JimfromOldham
's speech at the Oxford Farming Conference in January didn't mention how he can't protect farmers from his own members.👎
@BathEcho
It’s absolutely criminal these bollards were installed, it’s nothing to do with safety and entirely about eco zealotry of the Liberal Democrat & Green council
@ThrimbyFarms
@BenGoldsmith
Always struggle with nonsense like this because if you reply/engage with it you magnify its reach but how can you ignore something that suggests we cleanse large parts of our rural communities? The economy and the primary school with it would collapse without sheep farming here
I’ve been learning about Hopit the horse, who fought in the First World War. His owner Lieutenant John Forrester of the 9th Queens Lancers, came from Partridge Green and brought Hopit back with him. Incredible given the very high casualty rate of horses during the Great War.

Many of the councillors are farmers but
@ndevoncouncil
is blocking them from voting “Due to the codes and protocols outlined in N.Devon’s constitution, the councillors who work in farming will likely be told to abstain from voting for having a pecuniary interest in the matter.”
Labour's pick for Shadow DEFRA minister is the MP for North Croydon. He has never talked about farming in parliament and has only spoken about the environment six times since 2012. Another Londoner who will be telling rural communities how to live 👎
I’m hosting the
@FarmersOfTheUK
twitter account this week, come follow to find out more about how I got started in farming, where I’ve messed up along the way and what the future might look like for farmers young, old and new! 👍🏼
I joined residents from all over Bath this morning to protest against the roll-out of the Liberal Democrats Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. The majority of people who live on these streets don't want them - the Liberal Democrat councillors must listen to their clear voice
Not sure how I feel about turning what is already an emotionally intensive process for a family into a TV spectacle & dragging it out for 3 weeks. Aren’t you going to end up with two families absolutely devastated at the end of the process?
@nationaltrust
@FWphilclarke

Great to have a group of beef finishers on farm today sharing how they are using Breedr to maximise profitability & productivity. All under the age of 35 (with a token 60 year old!), there is a bright future for the cattle industry in this corner of the West Country 🐄
In all we’ve lost a quad bike, 105 bales of hay, fertiliser, feed store and all our tools, but these can all be replaced. 3 years we’ve been here and this is definitely the low point but know with the help of our landlord and friends we’ll be ok
Rural depopulation is becoming an increasing risk this decade with urban dwelling activists trying to disrupt the way rural communities have functioned for generations. They should fund rural communities to ensure they thrive whilst delivering for nature
Big thanks to
@sussex_police
&
@SussexRuralCops
, who helped stop a rave on our farm today. Organiser was scared of Covid fine! The Police Crime & Sentencing act is currently going through Parliament write to your MP & ask for support as once Covid act goes farmers need protection
I'm officially on the ballot for Bath! Only a vote for the Conservatives will send a clear message to the Liberal Democrats: stop the bollards & vanity projects, invest in services instead. Voting for anyone else endorses their actions and will put Sir Keir Starmer in Number 10.
40 weeks pregnant and still insists on coming down to the cows every morning, can’t even keep the straw fork out of her hands. The adjustable steering wheel is required though🤰🏼
The reality of tenant farming in the South East is that the cost of housing and your yard significantly distorts the economics of any business. That's why we've sadly given notice on 1/3 of our acreage and barns. We are on the lookout for a new tenancy please do get in touch
"It has come at a cost. We’ve put everything we have into the farm and, like many farmers, have sacrificed holidays and time with family to achieve self-sufficiency."
This month, In Your Field writer James Wright talks family and farming.
Neighbour and I are both young farmers, although he is much larger. We’ve both been using a lot of straw rolling it out, straw chopper was to much for either of us to justify alone but tougher it made sense 👍🏼
New steel shed with concrete panels going up this week, going to make a change from this pole barn built in the 1960s, it’s housed turkeys, caravans, was once a builders yard but most recently our Red Devon’s
When we turn up in the mornings all the cows go back into their beds so we can scrape up, all except 178. Who stands here resolutely till we move her on. Why does she think she’s special?
Great to talk to
@David_Cameron
today about what I’ve been hearing from people in Bath about their ambitions for global Britain.
Postal votes are landing today use vote to back someone who will champion businesses and residents both at home and in Westminster ✅
Last field for the year, becoming a bit clarty under foot (
@JRfromStrickley
), housed 4th of November last year think we’ll be a week earlier, ironically because of drought in August
Picked up a Wi-fi camera and connected it in an 4g wireless router we got free with our phone contract. Easy to setup and means we can keep a closer eye on the cows over calving. Auto detects humans with an alarm with auto record
Finishing our 226 day grazing season, lots of lessons learnt
🐏 grazing sheep overwinter massively knocks how early you can get out
🐄 3 day moves work great for us but when your grass stops growing due to lack of rain, you should stop moving and feed out to protect residual
Fantastic that after a campaign from local farmers and
@NDevonTories
, the motion to ban meat and dairy was defeated. Thank you to everyone who shared the message that we need sustainable mixed farming in rural Devon to protect our food security, economy and way of life.
This is the first Father’s Day since Dad died. I hope he’d be proud of how we’ve coped without him and, despite being a lifelong Liberal Democrat, proud that his son is standing for Parliament. I miss our arguments about policy and our adventures with my children.
Millionaires displacing rural communities instead of investing in and working with them to exponentially increase their impact. It's environmental hubris from an urban population who'd rather pay someone to plant trees rather than change their lifestyle.
We spread my father’s ashes at
@RSPBMinsmere
today. He was a summer warden in the 70s whilst at university, he taught me to birdwatch there & together we took my eldest son last year. It was one of his favourite places, thank you to Alex & the team who made it happen
A clear message from the residents and business owners I met this afternoon that the Liberal Democrat’s are pursuing vanity over sanity with their Low Traffic Neighbourhoods.
Tell me what matters to you by completing my Bath residents survey
Has
@BritishWool
ever had a female board member? Why in their executive team of 7 and their board of 13 is there only 1 woman? Maybe their historic poor performance is partially due to institutional group-think around outdated ideas of consumer & industry buying trends
Isobel and I owe a lot to
@georgewdunn
and the
@tenantfarmers
team, like many farmers across the UK they’ve been a constant support, especially good to see George as we move to a time without a farm!
The work to re-open Bath's police station was led by the then Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner
@ShelfordMark
- he also helped deliver 558 extra new police officers serving in Avon and Somerset. Making Bath and beyond a safer place to live and work.
When I first became an MP, the police station in Bath had just closed - causing public outcry.
I ran a high profile and successful campaign to get our
@ASPolice
station back into the city.
Having a hardworking local champion in Bath really matters in this election
@LibDems

Beginning of the end here as we take the barriers off the shed we built when we started our tenancy. Going to be a few moments like that next few months, I am entirely grateful for all we’ve learnt along the way
Farming on the urban fringe has its perks it’s easy to pick up a sausage roll from the Co-Op but does mean all to often I have to pick up litter like this. Balloon releases are lame, spend your money on things that don’t litter the countryside
Thank you to everyone who has voted for me by post so far! 🗳️ Sadly, my cows don't get a say in this election, but hopefully they’re all rooting for me!
Bath deserves an MP who is willing to stand up to the council, who will work to secure investment in our local economy and ensure that the city's priorities are championed at home and in Westminster.
Reminder: Bath's Lib Dem council raised council tax to the max and spent £7.4m on city centre bollards. Now they can't even cut the grass in children's play areas. Let's hold them accountable. Send a message on July 4th - Vote for James Wright.
This is a bizzare advert in
@FarmersWeekly
from a group who claim they’ll support farmers transition away from livestock farming. Reality is they are a vegan group who could potentially target vulnerable farmers after they’ve collected their contact details
I can't share the highs of farming and not share the lows as well, I didn't want to make this video but the process has been cathartic. Thanks to everyone who's messaged and called in the last month, it means a lot
Great to meet with
@ranil
and discuss future farming policy & the opportunities it creates promote new entrants. Bright future for food, farming & the environment
Today's announcement LTN guidance is a step in the right direction. Liberal Democrats in Bath, listen to residents & prioritise local consent. It's time for policies that empower individuals to make informed choices and enhance traffic flow - not arbitrarily curtail their freedom
I’ve always believed our politicians should demonstrate a level of common sense.
Despite the UK being a carbon-cutting world leader,
@Wera_Hobhouse
wants to tie the hands of those protecting us 24 hours a day, home and abroad, at a time when we need to support our armed forces.
The Ministry of Defence accounts for over half the emissions of all government departments.
Yet MOD seems content with setting half-hearted, feeble reduction targets, even though climate change will undoubtedly put pressure on global stability👇
Wayne defrauded us for over £7,500 last year when we sold him hay that he did not pay for when invoiced. At the time he was on bail pending his trial. In November he was found guilty of a larger fraud.

Wayne PARKER is wanted for failing to appear in court for sentencing, after being found guilty of fraudulent trading.

Last year I spoke to

’s Charlotte Smith about tenant farming & what needs to change to ensure we have a thriving sector. With 30 days to the budget please read the Rock Review, it contains 74 recommendations to secure its future! 🚜👨🌾
Other than cows contentedly eating, don’t think is a better sound that cows excited to move. There is no food, without farmers and that’s why £427m the largest ever productivity enhancing grants is available for food producing farmers this year 🚜
