Discovered this photograph, taken Nov '89, in my drawer. Jo’burg media members who “are currently facing charges, have been found guilty of offences or who have been threatened with state prosecutions” by the repressive apartheid state. I’m second from right.

As a journalist I always trusted the BBC, but that is a flagrant lie. It is part of a pattern of blindly siding with Israel and their propagandists.
What has happened to your rigorous journalism? You should be ashamed of yourself!
Very sad news: A Jo'burg institution, Manny Cabaleiro, from the Radium Beerhall has passed away.
I can still hear him say: “My dad called me Manual because he couldn’t spell Automatic…” followed by huge laugh. 😁 What a wonderful human being! We’ll miss him. ❤️
@JazzedUpRadium
Was reminded yesterday why I love my job (most of the time) when I had the most fabulous interview with Thandiswa Mazwai about her new album, ‘Sanfoka’.
It was entertaining, stimulating, thought-provoking and fun.

I saw with my own eyes as a journalist covering the murderous violence perpetrated by his Inkatha in the Natal townships during the late 80s/early 90s. Now even people who should know better will choose to ignore his evil past and pretend he was a saint.
He used to work in a serious managerial post at e-News (as eNCA was known previously). They could and should have asked people who worked there then. Their response (don’t hire him!) would’ve saved them a lot of embarrassment! I was there then, I know.
Based on Marvin's family's previous success with the plagiarism claim against "Blurred Lines" I'll put money on them succeeding again. Good luck to them!
Still can't believe I was privileged enough to interview
@noamchomskyT
this past Monday.
Here's something on it that I wrote for

Tomorrow you can hear the interview on our weekly podcast, Radio New Frame.

Just another comment: The headline "Operations of New Frame put on hold as retrenchments loom" is inaccurate.
Nothing has been put on hold, as the funder has pulled the plug on us with immediate effect!
We're shocked, sad and angry.
Art vs war. Going back 40 years to a subversive opposition to the apartheid war in SA.
Something I did for the
@mailandguardian
where I'm the acting arts editor for a few months.
Check this fascinating evidence by Stratcom's Vic McPherson and Craig Kotze at the TRC. It's long but informative. From a quick scan it appears that not any of supposed 40 still work in newsrooms. In fact, 20 of them didn't know they were "spies".
The
@mailandguardian
annual "God edition" is out – we also went big on the theme in the arts pages. My contribution focuses on a fascinating new book about the Islamic roots of
#Afrikaans
. And no, white Afrikaners weren't the first to write the language.

Why don’t you quote directly what Teeger said? That will make him far less of a victim than your story makes out.
Here it is: “Yes, I've been [given] this award, and yes, I'm now the rising star, but the true rising stars are the young soldiers in Israel.”
My interview with the wonderful

What a night!
@BokaniDyer
launched his exceptional album, ‘Radio Sechaba’, at Braamfontein’s Untitled Basement tonight.
The live show made the record even better for me!
@alfgunvald
took the pic & had too many G&Ts with me — he also got a signed copy of the LP.
I decided to record my fortnightly mixtape in our garden. Despite a few wind interruptions & an aeroplane droning overhead, it was fun & sounded fine.
The theme is “Don’t touch that dial”, with songs about the joy of radio. It's up on Wed -

Was so incredibly lucky yesterday.
I walked into the Vinyl Junkie record store here in Jo’burg as owner Benjy Mudie was putting this delectable box set of 7-inches produced by Scratch on the shelf. “Just for you,” he said. Who was I to argue? 😁

Here's my story about a bunch of young anti-occupation Israelis who are saying, "hell no, we won't go" to serve in their country's military machine. Their resistance takes on creative forms.
In 1963 then banned ANC started a pirate radio station here in
#Johannesburg
called Radio Freedom.
It wasn’t only risky for the broadcasters.
Listening to this station could land you in prison for 8years.

A friend after RWC final: In 'Football in Sun and Shadow', Eduardo Galeano writes:
"A reporter once asked the German theologian Dorothy Sölee: 'How would you explain to a child what happiness is?'
"'I wouldn't explain it,' she answered. 'I'd toss him a ball and let him play.'"
Today, exactly 2 months ago nearly 30 of us lost our jobs. We can't say a word more because the "pro-worker" (🤪) boss got us to sign a rigid NDA.

Here's something from 2002 about his previous stint at this TV station that thought it a good idea to reappoint him! “Journalists have an exaggerated sense of themselves," Pillay said about staffers leaving the then vile working environment (like now?).
"To build institutions and movements, you have to build people, and this is maybe the most radical thing anyone can invest their time in."

Excellent work, Khaya – this is what proper journalism should do: expose how poor and vulnerable people are left to fend for themselves.
Listening to his record as I was preparing to interview Linton Kwesi Johnson for an upcoming episode of our podcast, Radio New Frame. LKJ was fantastic, but I’ll admit that I felt quite intimidated…! He’s not one to suffer fools.

Can I suggest that people read this fascinating article by a black Afrikaans-speaking academic about the roots of the language (my mother tongue) that they so happily defend in narrow racial/racist terms?

I went to Sophiatown's pawnshop strip today, scoring 28 cheap singles: some township jive/jazz by the likes of the Nzimande All Stars, The Drive, Mahlatini & Mahotella Queens & Jazz Ministers; 4 Motown singles in mint; some old soul & DJ-able pop 45s too.
