I wrote something for
@TheSpinoffTV
on our bikepacking adventure in Pakistan, ahead of the NZ mountain film festival kicking off. Thanks to my legend mates
@patrickgowernz
and
@AngusGillies
for the editorial advice and expert sub!
The face of someone who thought she’d jinxed herself from seeing a tokoeka by talking about wanting to see a tokoeka too much. Saw three more after this ☺️
NZ's top scientists calmly conveying information about Antarctic sea ice that keeps them awake at night, that they find "upsetting" and "distressing". And the man who could choose the next government is telling the public climate change isn't serious. What an utter disgrace.
Today I got a puncture from some upholstery tacks someone placed on the Island Bay cycleway, and as I biked home on a friend’s borrowed bike a guy shouted “f***ing cyclist b*tch!!!”
I don’t really care because it was a beautiful day. Lol get a life haters
Very odd to watch the Twitter vitriol against NZ journalists asking reasonable Qs of the PM, who is happy to answer them.
Perhaps you’ve forgotten how lucky you are to have a press that actually asks all the questions, and that they get answered 🙃
Nico Porteous is kind, mature and genuine. He basically produced our interview last year (politely asked a guy to stop scraping snow in the back of our shot, tactfully suggested I probably shouldn’t attempt a rail live on air). What a role model, what a champ🥇
Plot twist! Heading back to the Press Gallery but this time as NZ Bureau Chief for
@SkyNewsAust
. Bear with me through this time of adjustment from Wānaka life to the wonderful cray cray of Parliament. Very excited!
Graham Gunn genuinely seemed impressed by Maipi-Clarke and how well she was polling, and when she told him at the candidate meeting she lived on the same road as his brother, he thought he’d pop by and say good luck.
Said goodbye to this guy today. 18 years ago I carried him down the driveway as a tiny feral kid fresh out of the bush. Developed a taste for white bread and feijoas. Had the most beautiful soft coat except in spring when he shed it in glorious dags. Bye Jakey 🐐❤️
Spent the day learning about kākāpō gut health and loved it. Now to concoct the Whenua Hou version of kefir and kombucha!! 💩 🦜thanks

I took off my new and eye-wateringly pricy Garmin watch (that I agonised over buying for WEEKS) when I was putting on my wetsuit at St Clair at the weekend.
Realised hours later, glumly posted in a Dunedin news page. Just got a message from the guy who found it!!! I love Aotearoa
Just ran from my parents’ place on outskirts of Hamilton along the new section of cycleway linking Mangaharakeke Stream with the river. I might be overtired but seeing these boys biking home from school on a safe, peaceful path almost brought a tear to my eye!
Shlepping bicycle bag weighing in at 37kg at Lahore airport, things were looking decidedly iffy as 4 men used 2 tape measures to assess whether I could check in. Upon checking my passport an official declared “Jacinda Ardern! Very good lady” and waved me thru. Thx
@jacindaardern
Went away for for my birthday after deleting X off my phone. Opened it now I'm back at work, and hello to everyone calling me a racist, white apologist, whitewasher etc. I had a lovely weekend gravel biking along Karangahake gorge, surfing and beachside sauna at Waihi. Recommend!
In a tiny Kyrgyz town a teenage boy asks where we are from. “Nova Zelandia,” we reply.
“Ah! New Zealand! Your girls are very good at football! The best in the world!”
Some absolutely CRACKING news! 'Doma' - the film my brother
@jackewing
filmed and edited (some footage by me) of our cycling journey across Central Asia has been selected as a finalist in the New Zealand Mountain Film Festival. Brilliant timing too, captive audience yeeeha
Nervous about publishing this - didn't want to cast a shadow over a great love of mine! But I couldn't write about trail running without acknowledging the wariness that creeps in every time I go for a run
2427km, 49 days, multiple mountain passes, camps above 4500m, wild animal pursuits, cruel headwinds, baths in alpine springs, chai, vodka, unending warmth from strangers, pain, despair, euphoria and the highest sense of fulfillment. What. A. Ride!
My beautiful cat Slinky has been missing for 4 days in Hataitai. Not a single distinguishing mark except for being a green-eyed babe but if you go “Sliiiiinkyyyy” and shake some food he’ll turn into your best mate. Please tell your friends
This is the moment an egg is cracked on the head of Australian senator Fraser Anning.
He's been caught in a row after appearing to blame the New Zealand mosque attack on Muslim immigration
Nelson taxi driver said “f*ckin hell”, “shit!”, and “you’re bloody mad!” in response to me telling him I’m biking to Hanmer through the mountains. Where’s the positivity
Couple weeks ago boyfriend reckoned spearfishing was a legit activity to do under lockdown. Only 10m offshore, good viz, etc (I disagreed!)
Then a 2m bronze whaler attacked his catchbag, 3m away from him sitting on the bottom. Nice of sharks to assist

Running Rakiura’s NW circuit. Started 4pm on Tuesday, now 85km in. Today we have 50km between us (Long Harry Hut) and Kai Kart and a blue cod burger (closes at 7.30pm). My morale hangs on that burger, wish us luck! 🐟 🏃♀️
Spent Saturday running the rugged and extremely hilly Aorangi Undulator. A truly gruelling but beautiful grassroots trail race out near Cape Palliser. And the hardest thing I’ve ever done. 32k and 2.7k elevation! But I won! 🍻
I almost tripped over him/her on the track while running in broad daylight and gave us both a big fright! He/she did a comical jump and forward flip then went straight back to poking round for bugs as if we weren’t there. Amazing.
Here's why you should be concerned about the siphoning off of climate change cash by the two major parties - valuable input from
@cjhood71
and Dr Geoff Bertram
Northern Pakistan. Spellbound by its landscapes and humbled by its people’s warmth and hospitality. The mountain passes we hoped to ride are still too tricky for cyclists with snow melt and deep mud, so I will certainly be back!
Today’s my last day in
@featurestory
’s Budapest bureau. It’s been a whacky old year but I’ve met some wonderful people and told some cracking yarns. Thank you
@CGTNEurope
for the opportunity to share Hungarians’ stories with the world, this is a special - if at times mad - place.
The short but incredibly crushing clip of Clark savaging Bloomfield is everywhere on the TL and I can’t watch it anymore 😰 this is the power of television - 6 secs of vision can tell a whole story and provoke a visceral reaction. Amazing work

Saturday: left home 4.30pm, up here just before 9pm. Slept on the floor and woken at 2, 3 and 4am by climbers preparing to summit Aspiring. Aeropress on the deck at sunrise. Very lucky
"It's hard to look at the future my children will experience, with a total awareness of the insufficient action we are taking." - Natalie Robinson, marine physicist at NIWA in today's urgently-called summit about drastic low Antarctic sea ice levels
These guys invited us in for tea. Then they revealed they’ve been married a week and the “tea” is their post-wedding family feast! We haven’t showered in days! We definitely reek! Mortified but very happy and full of mutton, potato salad, noodles, grapes and fried bread
Also his wife Ginny told me the National Party had been in touch telling them not to speak to media. But Gunny had left his cellphone at home when he went to bowls lol
if anyone has any nice allegations against a celebrity that would be great too. does a famous actor give good christmas presents. does lady comedian alwyays smoke people out
Found someone in my seat and I was like “sorry I think thats my seat” and they’re like “your ticket says NZ8305, are you going to Invercargill?”
I’m going to Nelson.
Cool start to Monday 😎
Climbed Sharktooth yesterday. A mountain topped with a pile of precariously-stacked weetbix rock. “Don’t grab onto anything hard” - boyfriend’s advice as I crab-shuffled above 200m of exposure. 2000m vert and home in time for lunch!
Excellent address from
@NZ_PCE
Simon Upton on the gigantic problem of the lack of reporting / environmental monitoring which means there’s never enough info to back the case for funding.
Boring but critical roadblock to change
@Forest_and_Bird
Listening to my voice on a coronavirus script, Hungarian camera op comments: "Mini countries including Hungary have offered medical equipment.. Mini? Orban won't like that..."
Is this why NZ reporters change their accents to quasi British ones when they work overseas...
"We have coordinated today’s emergency summit on Antarctic sea ice and climate change in response to the alarmingly low sea ice extent, which is well outside the
observed variability of the entire satellite record of 44 years"
Stopped on my run picking some nasturtium flowers and a lady screeches to a stop in her Ute and bellows “do you know the young leaves are great in a salad??” Then looks down and yells “not you ya bastard!!” at some thistle and begins furiously yanking it out
Tonight a wolf leapt out of the darkness at my brother and I as we cycled late into a remote Tajik town. Jack let out a hair raising involuntary scream and I thought it’d grabbed him
Still utterly horrified by White House false claims against Acosta and stripping his credentials. If reporters can’t ask challenging questions of a leader without retribution it is not a democracy! Dangerous and infuriating
I've not cooked once since lockdown began. My three male flatmates have so far made a lamb roast, venison roast, zucchini quiche, foccacia, tonight there is brownie for dessert and I just had a wine poured for me when I got home. I'm pretty sweet with this four day extension tbh
Bill English told me a couple weeks ago he spent a week on Stewart Island over summer w family. He swam at Ulva Island, “a beautiful, wild place” I reckon it was then that he made up his mind
Talent: "My cousin is from Poland and my girl cousin... what's the word for girl cousin?"
Me: "Cousin..."
Talent, muttering: "Cousin. Yes. English. Terrible language."
Hey man in Subaru holding down your horn at my grandparents in their late 80s doing 10k below the speed limit, gran had absolutely no idea what your problem was 😂
