What does the citizenship mean for Northern Kenya? Three important pronouncements by the judiciary and executive in the recent days. 1. Removal of @WilliamsRuto of the discriminatory administrative standard of "vetting" applicants from Northern Kenya in issuance national ID and passports. We are as Kenyan as other Kenyans. 2. The affirmation by the court of the collective rights of the "people" to determine the use of their natural resources. "Conservation" does not trump the right of a people (including Northerners) to determine how to use their land. Our land, our herigate. 3. On the demographic representation of citizenship. The affirmation by the court of the right to be "counted" and by extension to be allocated national resources based on that count. Our numbers matter. Small steps. Huge impact.

While the news is still fresh. A “mercenary” is a person who takes a direct part in hostilities/conflict motivated essentially by the desire for private gain. Mercenaries are not entitled to status of Prisoners of War as they are not considered combatants within the meaning of the law of armed conflict. Mercenaries are entitled to the fundamental guarantees of IHL, to be treated humanely and to be granted fair trial.

European mercenaries have a long history in the DRC, often serving anyone who will pay them. In the 1960s Moïse Tshombe recruited one of the most infamous ones to defend the breakaway Katanga state against the central government . "Mad Mike" Hoare became a legend during his time in the DRC. He once said: “There are no innocent mercenaries. We are all in it for one thing: money. But you must be professional, and you must have a cause."

An intensive bush fire in Isiolo County Chetab and Sericho wards. Large tracks of grazing land burnt exposing communities to possibility of limited pasture for their animals. @KenyaRedCross volunteers supporting the community in creating fire breaks to halt the spread of the #Fire A combination of strong winds and dry vegetation cover making it difficult to control the spread.

Deeply saddened by the Death of Prof. Abdalla Bujra. He was a scholar, an activist and a good person. Kenya & in particular the people of coast region, lost a great person. He will be remembered for his work on multi party democracy, protection of community land & advacement the rights of indigenous people. I had the honour of working with him in a research project on land, class idealogy and kenyan politics as an undergrad student. I remember fondly his brilliance and investment in our learning. May Allah have mercy on him. @karutikk @WMutunga

Shocked and heartbroken by the loss of three @WFP team members in an aerial bombardment in Blue Nile State, Sudan. Any loss of life in humanitarian service is unconscionable. Aid workers are not – and should never be – a target. #NotATarget
