Despite this history, Smethwick and Marshall Street have now become some of the most multicultural and diverse areas in the country.

Only a few short years later, Mosley had founded the infamous British Union of Fascists, aligning himself with the likes of Hitler and Mussolini.

This was also once the consistency of British fascist leader Oswald Mosley, though his politics were very different at the time during his tenure as MP for Smethwick, it was here where his rapid descent towards fascism began.

With Conservative MP Peter Griffiths winning his campaign alongside the slogan of: ‘if you want a n****r for a neighbour, vote Labour’. The local Labour Party wasn’t much better, with colour bars and segregation rife across the area.

Just a year prior in 1964, this was also the constituency where what has infamously been dubbed as ‘Britain’s most racist election’ took place.

At this time local residents on Marshall Street successfully petitioned the council to buy up vacant properties to prevent ‘coloured’ people from living there.

Despite having lived, witnessed and fought the worst of racism in the U.S, X was compelled to accept the invitation and visit Smethwick as he had heard that ‘coloured’ people in the local area were treated as the Jews were under Hitler.

60 years ago, on February 12th 1965, the great anti-racist icon Malcolm X visited Smethwick, a town just outside of Birmingham, on the invitation of the Indian Workers Association. He was assassinated 9 days later.
