St Edward’s Church, Stow-on-the-Wold - certainly one of the most photogenic portals I’ve ever seen

@oldcreakey2010 I’ve been fascinated by it since we visited on a school trip aged about 6 and were given a small piece of bread and about a thimble worth of ale as a wayfarer’s dole

Anne was Edward’s housekeeper. A bust of her by Stott’s neighbour, sculptor Francis Derwent Wood, can be found at Standen House, West Sussex. Derwent Wood also executed Stott’s giant memorial in Amberley churchyard

The fortress of Rocca Albornoziana stands atop Colle Sant’Elia in Spoleto, strategically dominating the entire valley It was built in the C14 as part of securing the Papal States in readiness for the Pope’s return from Avignon, subsequently it was home for Lucrezia Borgia

@Portaspeciosa @todbooklady @StroudStory The Island was my second home as a child and I can practically see it from my window so haven’t really felt inclined to visit for years, now I think I have a reason 🤩

The Printer’s Devil at 33 Stonegate, York advertised its local printing press Speculative explanations link the devil to printers. Perhaps it was a name for the printer’s assistant, or ink-stained fingers associated with dark arts, or a prototype “gremlin” blamed for mistakes

@domuscapituli Ha! Now I need to find out where I first read that piece of speculation. I was dubious that a tomb would be so well known as to be influential on church design a thousand years later and a thousand miles away 😆

Two examples of the Madonna del Latte at the Basilica of San Gregorio Maggiore, Spoleto This iconography was common until the C16 Council of Trent which discouraged it in public due to propriety concerns Left, C14 by the Maestro di Fossa Right, unable to find details

@andrewsp2009 @begynnynge @castlehunteruk I’ll go for a castle along the lines of Arundel Castle. Got the Norman keep and walls, but also a bit of luxury in the less ancient wings
