@RogerClark_PSFC Private capital always seeks returns on short horizons and therefore will not fund basic research which yields outsized returns but on very long horizons. Name one country that has improved living standards without public investment in science. You cannot.

When you have a society that only glorifies wealth, that's what you get. The irony is that the advocates still only want to validate their position by flaunting the material things made possible through research and the 9-5 employees in organisations producing such products.
Nobody said you shouldn’t trade, but… What is with this new trend of berating people who pursue academia, and those with 9-5 jobs? If actually, your self esteem is high enough, the first part of your tweet wouldn’t exist. PS: no one ever said 9-5 was the only way. No one ever said that. Not in Nigeria, not anywhere.

Whether this, the new regional commissions or the VP lodge "renovations", Nigerians are arguing about "corruption', but it is not literally corruption for its own sake like is usual with Nigerian politics. Man is building a trillion naira bank for buying off the 2027 election.
With our annual imports estimated at N71 trillion, the new 4% customs administration charge on Free On Board (FOB) value will come to N2.84 trillion. Does this mean that the Customs Service requires an additional N2.84 trillion annually to do its job? Don't forget they already have a budget and get an incentive percentage on total customs duties collected. Now, they want to spend more than $1.5 billion on running costs in a country with the poverty index we have and with many businesses closing down. Importers will inevitably pass these costs on to consumers, further straining the budgets of millions of struggling households. This new fee of 4% is not even restricted to luxury goods but across all imports, so even for industries that import their raw materials whose duties are only 5%, the customs agency will now charge importers an extra 80% of the duty amount as administrative fees! How can this make sense or support the government's policy of promoting the ease of doing business? The government must urgently reconsider this policy and put it on hold immediately. Especially not now with what Nigerians are going through.

Been happening for years. However, it's ironically as a result of APC's failure than any success. The disastrous crash of the naira means that the diaspora can afford the best available private healthcare services in Nigeria while majority of Nigerians can barely buy paracetamol.
