Over the the last 5 years we’ve seen a huge rise in the number IENs employed by the NHS. As the community Lead got Safe Haven, We have also had the opportunity to provide pastoral care and support for a huge number of these IENs through our Safe Haven Community! The issues faced by IENs is quite enormous, hundreds of our IENs report poor experiences around language barrier, accents, getting in trouble over cultural differences and not feeling welcomed or recognised by their employers! Lots of IENs have been offered roles below their bandings, with little or no support. Over the last few years, I have held conversations, physical conferences, well-being retreats, fire side chats, virtual meetings, share and learn sessions to boost morale, confidence and also support the health and well-being of our IENs. This year I’m pleased to announce that, the community is hosting the second annual safe haven conference, which is an event, that brings together, IENs, Employees who are interested in the well-being of their IENs, anyone allies who is pretty much involved in the recruitment and retention of IENs, We’ve got seasoned speakers to speak on various topics that affects IENs and they would also tackle how to resolve this issues which would also help their retention within their various employments! Especially around Cultural Intelligence, the conference also provides opportunities for IENs to meet other IENs from other parts of country, share and experiences and share stories! (This has proven to really boost morale and promote a sense of belonging amongst our IENs). We’ve had the opportunity to partner with @KingsCollegeNHS and @SPFT_NHS who has secured spots for some of their IENs to attend the Confetence!
