On this day in 1991, over 40,000 Cornish people travelled to Twickenham in England to watch Cornwall beat Yorkshire in a dramatic final of the rugby County Championship. This was 10% of Cornwall’s population - the largest ever gathering of Cornish people outside of Cornwall.

On this day in 1497, a Cornish-led army numbering nearly 15,000 approached Guildford, commanded by Michael Jospeh An Gof, Thomas Flamank and Baron Audley. The army was marching to London to demand the return of the Cornish Stannary Parliament and an end to taxes.

On this day in 2001, the first choughs to be seen in Cornwall for over 30 years were reported on the Lizard. The pair remained and raised chicks the following year. Today there are 39 breeding pairs which fledged over 100 young in 2023. 〓〓 The chough is Cornwall’s national bird

On this day in 2014, Cornish people were recognised as a national minority and given special cultural protection. The Government said this gave them the "same status as the UK's other Celtic people - the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish". We’ve yet to see the fruits of that status

On this day in 2004, the average rainfall for the whole of August fell in just two hours on Boscastle and other settlements in north-east Cornwall causing devastating floods. Miraculously, no lives were lost. My car was though. And I’m not overly keen to get in a helicopter again

“OLÉ, OLÉ, OLÉ, OLÉ. CORNWALL, CORNWALL!” On this day in 1991, over 40,000 Cornish people (1 in 10) travelled to Twickenham to watch Cornwall beat Yorkshire in the final of the Rugby County Championship. This was only the second time that a Cornish side had won the Championship.

For those bemoaning the rail decisions today, trying living in north Cornwall. Nearest mainline station an hour away. Never mind the north always being overlooked - we don’t even merit consideration. 500k annual visitor to Bude - all by car. That’s simply unsustainable.

The world’s first ever successful railway journey was undertaken at the Penydarren Ironworks in Cymru 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 on this day in 1804, when Richard Trevithick's steam engine carried 11 tonnes of iron and 70 passengers on rails. A Cornishman had changed the world.

On this day in 1799, former West African slave Joseph Emidy was set free from the Royal Navy in Falmouth after being forced to serve aboard HMS Indefatigable for four years. He settled in Cornwall, married a Cornish woman and became leader of the Truro Philharmonic Orchestra.

On this day in 1791, Cornishwoman Mary Bryant stole a small boat and began her escape from Australia with her family and 7 other prisoners. They travelled 5,000 kilometres, reaching Timor in Indonesia after 69 days. This was one of the most amazing journeys ever made in a boat.
