ISTA is the voice of public education and educators in Indiana. ISTA membership offers a collective voice for the education profession and public schools.
When educators are heard, respected, and given the resources we need, we can give students our very best. Join ISTA, the largest union in Indiana, as we work together to ensure that educators have a stronger voice at the local and state level.

During active shooter drill, four teachers at a time were taken into a room, told to crouch down and were shot execution style with some sort of projectiles - resulting in injuries to the extent that welts appeared, and blood was drawn.
The teachers were terrified, but were told not to tell anyone what happened. Teachers waiting outside that heard the screaming were brought into the room four at a time and the shooting process was repeated.
No one in education takes these drills lightly. The risk of harming someone far outweighs whatever added realism one is trying to convey here. ISTA requests an amendment in bill so that more reasonable limits are placed on these drills.
ISTA would like to have educator and student safety addressed in active shooter drills at schools. ISTA heard from members who were injured during a recent training.
An
@ISTAmembers
just testified to the Senate Education Committee that teachers have reported being shot with pellet guns during school safety training. Gail Zeharalis said teachers reported hearing "screaming" and the bullets resulted in welts and blood...
Zeharalis from the
@ISTAmembers
asked the Senate Ed Committee to include language in a school safety funding bill that would define what school safety training could entail.
At his news conference today, Gov. Holcomb has announced that Indiana will move forward with its current K-12 education budget and will not be making any cuts.
ISTA is testifying in support of HB 1004. Support approach of school-based mental health and social emotional wellness services. This has the best potential of getting at the root causes of such tragedies.
One more photo from today. This little guy stole our hearts this morning. He was captured by

Senate education committee is now hearing HB 1004. The bill makes various changes to the Indiana safe schools grant program, including permitting safe schools grants to be used to provide school-based mental health services or social emotional wellness services to students.
Indiana appears to be among the first to formally reject guidance from Betsy DeVos that directs greater relief fund support for private schools at the expense of high-poverty public school districts.
The Senate education committee will be starting any minute. For new bills being heard today, we will be particularly watching HB 1629 and HB 1004. Here's the full agenda:
Our teacher shortage is so severe, nearly 10% of Indiana teachers are now teaching under an emergency license. Is this good for kids and state? No. This is what happens when the supermajority in the legislature fails to listen to teachers year after year.
Now is the time for action!
ISTA is just getting started in making positive change for the kids and future for the state of Indiana.

Testimony continues on HB 1004. There is one bill left on the agenda and a committee rule that meetings end at 5 p.m. Sen. Crane is chairing today's meeting.
Rep. McNamara is closing on HB 1004. Says this bill is about creating a safe environment, prevention and getting kids the mental health resources help they need.
ISTA is working on an amendment to this bill that addresses the active shooter training issue. ISTA supports HB 1004 as a positive step in addressing root causes of these school-based tragedies. ISTA thanks
@RepWendyMac
for bringing it forward.
The House has passed HB 1003. The bill ensures traditional public schools receive full funding for all modes of teaching and learning provided for the entire 2020 – 21 school year. The bill is an ISTA legislative priority.
Citing an increase in cases of COVID-19, Gov. Holcomb has announced he will be signing an executive order mandating masks. The order will be effective as of Monday.
Whatever our color, background, or ZIP code, we want our children to have an education that imparts honesty about who we are, integrity in how we treat others, and freedom to pursue our dreams.
#FreedomToLearn
Committee is now considering HB 1003. Members amended the bill by consent to add some more reporting info to be collected. Bill would set goals for schools to spend at least 85% of their education funding on classroom expenses, including teacher salaries. Bill passes 8-2.
ISTA also has concerns that requiring a FAFSA may have unintended consequence of penalizing students by preventing them from graduating, merely due to the failure to complete a form - may disproportionately impact lower income students.
Today, I am directing every state to prioritize educators for vaccination. We want every educator, school staff member, and child-care worker to receive at least one shot by the end of this month.
It’s time to treat in-person learning like the essential service that it is.
Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray has killed SB 167 citing "no path forward."
Thank you to our members and advocates for making your voice heard. Please stay tuned as this bill's language still has a chance to appear in further legislation this session.
Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray (R-Martinsville) made the following statement today regarding SB 167:
"Members of the Senate continued to work on Senate Bill 167, but have determined there is no path forward for it and will not be considered."
The next governor must make public education a priority by pledging no cuts to education and addressing educators pay and working conditions.

Gov. Holcomb signed SEA 486 today. We will not allow this to stop us from fighting for our profession, our schools and our kids. We are committed to standing up against any attempts to weaken or dismantle our public schools.
Richard Goodall, a West Vigo Middle School custodian and ISTA member, earned the Golden Buzzer on "America's Got Talent" with his performance of "Don't Stop Believin'!" We’re proud to call him a member, and all of Indiana will be cheering him on! 🎤✨
Even in improved form, HB 1134 still feeds divisiveness and the politicization of our public schools. We will continue to advocate for legislators to do what’s right and vote no on HB 1134.
"I want to address the recent actions of AG Todd Rokita. His decision to launch a website targeting our public schools is nothing but a transparent attempt to create division among parents and educators. Therefore, we’re calling for the immediate removal of this site."
As demonstrated by the 2023 session of the Indiana General Assembly, the Republican supermajority is more concerned with creating problems rather than solving them. 🧵
HB 1629 is a various education matters bill. Several unrelated elements in the bill. Highlights include: Schools would not be able to charge a fee for the first five
hours required to search for a record that is in an electronic format, but could if more than five hours.
"We thank our members and the thousands of advocates who have made their voices heard. We also thank President Pro Tem Bray for agreeing to not move forward with SB 167.
We urge Speaker Huston to follow President Pro Tem Bray’s lead by not moving forward with HB 1134.
Again, Indiana teachers are left behind their colleagues in neighboring states. Indiana needs to prioritize teachers in the state's vaccine plan and tell teachers when they will be next in line.
Next week, Ohio will make the

vaccine available to 91,000 K-12 teachers and school personnel who are necessary to provide in-person education to students.

HB 1629 would also require the state board, when approving any Core 40 curriculum models, adopt a graduation requirement that students must file the FAFSA as condition of graduation.
ISTA also requests addition to provision that would require a principal to ensure suspended students receive school work and teacher contact information. Want to make sure contact information be limited to school contact info and that contact be limited to normal working hours.
ISTA will be joining a news conference along with a coalition of civil rights, faith, parent and public education groups tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET. We will be calling on the Indiana General Assembly to oppose plans to revive the divisive concepts found in

It's with great sadness that we share the passing of ISTA staff member Ann Wilkins. Ann was a union sister and friend to many. She was passionate about public schools, kids and serving members of ISTA. She will be greatly missed. We send our love and condolences to her family.

After waiting five and a half hours and through 55 testifiers, ISTA has an opportunity to speak to the Senate School Funding Subcommittee on behalf of our members and in support of public schools. Now is the time to invest in our public schools.
On this Eva Education Day and Holocaust Remembrance Day we're reminded that we must continue to teach students all of our history - no matter how uncomfortable.
We need to eliminate or reduce standardized testing during the 2020 – 21 school year. During this crisis it’s important to prioritize school time on those activities that benefit students most.
"Washington Township Schools said Monday it will not bring students back into classrooms to start the new school year due to an increasing number of coronavirus cases."

More than 150 educators from around the state converged at the State Board of Education meeting today in Indianapolis to voice their concerns about two critical issues: the literacy endorsement requirements and proposed changes to high school diplomas.

ISTA testifies on HB 1629. Appreciates Rep. Behning working with ISTA on sections of the bill. Have concerns that redefining elementary schools might inadvertently open the voucher program to schools offering only pre-K and kindergarten.
Don't just take our word for it. Indiana's community newspapers and reporters all agree, the proposed budget prioritizes private schools over Indiana's public schools that teach more than 90% of students.

Gov. Holcomb has announced today that all public schools will remain closed until May 1 and may need to close for remaining year. All state-mandated tests are cancelled for the remaining academic year.
Components of this bill could return, so we’ll stay vigilant, but we hope lawmakers will take this opportunity to step back and collaborate with educators, parents, and others to create legislation that everyone can support for the benefit of all of our students.
Today, ISTA and a broad coalition of faith, civil rights, parent and public education groups are calling on the General Assembly to stop efforts to insert language from

into another bill behind closed doors in the final days of the legislative session.
Thanks to the hundreds of calls from members and advocates into the Statehouse yesterday and today demanding greater funding for traditional public schools, lawmakers have taken the rare step to work on another budget this afternoon.
"We call on
@GovHolcomb
take a bold stand with educators by swiftly vetoing this bill and demonstrating his unwavering support for our state's teachers.”
"Once again, the General Assembly has callously betrayed Indiana's hardworking educators and flagrantly ignored the impassioned pleas of our state's teachers by passing SB 486."
There is no link between private school vouchers and student achievement. In fact, what research we do have shows that vouchers caused students more harm than good. Let's do what's best for kids and prioritize investing in our public schools.

SB 386 has been pulled from the agenda for tomorrow's Senate Education Committee. We will continue to fight against this bill and any others that are an attack on an honest education.
ISTA and members of the Indiana Educational Equity Coalition are holding a news conference today to call for an end to divisive legislation, including the defeat of SB 386.
It's not just teachers speaking out against privatization. So far, at least 65 school boards have passed formal resolutions against bills expanding private school vouchers and ESAs.
