Marking three decades of celebrating the power and impact of Jamaican music culture globally, International Reggae Day (IRD) this year gives focus to the importance of Reggae’s contribution to resistance movements globally. 👊 Throughout history, Reggae music has provided powerful anthems for freedom fighters around the globe. One of the most poignant examples is Bob Marley's song "War". Released in 1976 and based on a speech by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, "war" became an anthem against oppression and inequality. At the time, South Africa was entrenched in the brutal system of apartheid, where racial segregation and discrimination were legally enforced, and the song resonated deeply with those fighting for liberation. Marley's "War" echoed across continents, giving voice to the oppressed and uniting those who yearned for justice.
