The SP is not for people who want instant gratification of making a beat. Sure you can load things off SD easy enough and get busy in the sequencer but the real fun comes in when you start resampling/manipulating your audio and committing to experimenting with sound

People who think sampling isn't art or isn't a useful skill in creating music are wack. Learning to use samples effectively is an extremely useful talent. It teaches you new melodies, composition, you need to learn a bit about mixing generally, also great for ear training

Highly recommend EQ cheat sheets if you’re struggling with a mix too. This one is great because it gives you the language if you wanna talk to another engineer about what you’re struggling with. I will say tho I’ve never used “girth” when describing a snare 😂

The metronome is your friend. When you learn how to lock into the metronome then you can start swinging your drums outwards when finger drumming. Practice. Sometimes that means taking time outside of making tracks to do so. It doesn't make you any less productive.

Panning is an extremely useful tool for separating your mix. Fill up the stereo field. If you’re struggling with “well this sounds too far to my left and the right sounds empty” or vice versa send that sound to an aux reverb and pan the reverb to the opposite side the sound is on

using the volca so I dug mine out and loaded some drums I made on it. I combo’d it with the PO33 for chops and the SP is mainly for a whole lotta compression/tape sim. Gunna make a full beat Volca only next now that I got vosyr 👌🏽

Just so ya'll know, cuz I do think there is a misunderstanding. SP-1200, MPC 2000XL, all them vintage samplers etc, are no more "Analog" than the MPC Live, SP404mk2, etc. Once the audio is inside any of those samplers it's converted to digital. (1/2)
