Data published by @policeconduct show a worrying upward trend in police custody deaths. In 2023/24 there were: ➡️24 deaths in or following police custody. ➡️ 68 apparent suicides within 48 hours of release from police custody. Read our statement here:

The latest @MoJGovUK & @HMPPS stats show: ➡️308 deaths in the 12 months to June 2024, 85 of which were self-inflicted. ➡️852 incidents of self-harm per 1,000 prisoners, a 16% increase from the previous 12-month period & the highest since records began.

We welcome the long awaited reform to the Mental Health Act and an introduction of a duty of candour in the King's Speech. These will help prevent future deaths by properly safeguarding individuals detained and ensuring learning from previous failings.
