With 80mph winds forecast tomorrow, the Humber Bridge may have to close completely. It’s impossible to say whether a closure will be needed, when, and for how long, but it’s a possibility. Please avoid the Bridge unless totally necessary. We will post updates throughout the day.
Due to a recent incident, we have decided to close the footways on both sides of the Humber Bridge for an indefinite period.
We appreciate this may cause inconvenience but we ask that pedestrians and cyclists respect the decision and avoid the Humber Bridge at the present time.

Why do we close the tag lane in high winds?
We close the HumberTag lane during high winds to stop prohibited vehicles travelling south over the bridge. Although it can lead to congestion, it's the safest way to manage the bridge. For more info, click here

The Humber Bridge Board has agreed plans to raise the height of the barriers along the Bridge’s walkways to increase the safety and security of visitors and users.
The planned work will see vertical steel posts with horizontal wire attached to the existing barriers to improve

For many travellers heading north, the first sight of the Barton Tower means they are nearly home - but on this day 48 years ago, the Barton Tower had only reached a height of 19 metres.
While the North Tower topped out in 1974, it would be another two years before the Barton
Due to the complex geology on the Barton side of the estuary, the decision was made to build Barton Tower on its own island. In 1973, a temporary pier was built out to the proposed location of the tower so work on the island could start. Here are some wonderful original photos!

TRAFFIC UPDATE - The Humber Bridge remains closed to high sided/wind vulnerable vehicles. Please note that this status is likely to remain in place throughout Monday and possibly into Tuesday.
TRAFFIC ALERT: Next week, routine cable inspections will take place on the Humber Bridge, which means those travelling across may see people working on the cables above.
Please be assured they are specialist contractors appointed to do the job and are meant to be there.
The main cable is made up of 11,000 tonnes of steel wire. It contains 37 strands, each of which comprise of 404 5mm wires.
Once completed, the main cable was clamped into position with cable bands and the hangers that attach to the road deck are connected to these.
Did you know that due to the complex geology on the Barton side of the bridge, Barton Tower is built on its own island? Because of this, during construction a temporary pier had to be created to access the proposed location for the tower. Check out these photos from the time!

Did you know that the road deck of the Humber Bridge
Yesterday, our Property and Estates team played hero to a tiny hedgehog in a bit of a pickle on our grounds. A speedy call to Andrew's Hedgehog Hospital and off it zoomed in the hedgehog ambulance for a dose of tender loving care.
Did you know, the total mass of the of Barton anchorage is 300,000 tonnes, the equivalent of 5 Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers! It's also 35m deep and is sunk into Kimmeridge Clay. Although machines were used to dig the clay, at times, it had to be dug out by hand.

Free flow tolling has moved a step closer at the Humber Bridge. The board has appointed a company to install a new tolling system, which will see the bridge go fully booth-free for the first time in its 43-year history, with payments being made through a new website and mobile
One of the main problems to overcome when designing a very long span bridge is the issue of movement under certain wind conditions. As a result, the Humber Bridge Deck Boxes are designed to be like upside down aircraft wings to keep the Road Deck stable during high winds.
