Some dead insects from the Maldives now I am back home. Really surprised by the ubiquity of rhinoceros beetles! Though I only saw females (for the big ones: the small one I have no idea of sex)

I love batfish but it pains me that they are always down 4 or 5 metres deep in reef slopes. My lung capacity is tiny, I have no training in free diving, I obliterate my inner ear to get a blurry photo of you. Am I not worthy?

On the resort (spinner) dolphin watching trip, there was a beaked whale which I unfortunately didn’t photograph. it was this light brown, rotund whale, everyone thought it was a huge dolphin. And in classic ziphiid fashion it disappeared into the depths after surfacing 2 times.

Happy Year of the Snake! I forgot to buy 揮春 today, so I wrote “蝮” (viper, homonym of “福” fortune) on regular paper. Last year I found some truly fine serpents (incl. 14/45 of Hong Kong’s snakes), so I hope it’ll be a year where 「蝮到」.

Yesterday night was perfect weather for the elusive mountain pitviper (Ovophis tonkinensis) to come out, did not disappoint! Not only do these oviparous vipers come out during the winter months at the highest altitudes, but also use both venom and constriction to kill prey.

the wintry starworm is endangered and endemic to Hong Kong, found only in a few localities. The larviform female is a tiny predator of millipedes, and emits one strong light to attract a male. When it is gravid, light organs all over its body flare up, hence the name “starworm”.
