It's simple.. Occupied areas become a recognised state that has protection from Russia, Ukraine is put on a pathway to join NATO with an article 5 clause that if the attack the newly recognised state then they forfeit any protection, Russia gets it's buffer from NATO & continues to have a route to it's warm water fleet..
