February 9, 1825: The US House of Representatives selected John Quincy Adams as the sixth President after the 1824 election failed to produce a majority electoral vote winner. The election had four candidates from the Democratic-Republican Party, with Andrew Jackson leading in both electoral and popular votes but falling short of a majority. The House chose from the top three, excluding Henry Clay, who then supported Adams. After Adams won, he appointed Clay as Secretary of State which sparked accusations of a "corrupt bargain." This significantly impacted American politics and led to the formation of the two party system we see today.
